Beavers Slip Past Bears

BERKELEY –  After a back-and-forth affair in the first half, No. 16 Oregon State pulled ahead in the third quarter to beat 20th-ranked California, 66-56, Friday night at Haas Pavilion. The loss snaps Cal's seven-game home win streak and marks the team's second consecutive loss, both of which have come to Top-20 opponents. The Golden Bears fall to 13-2 on the season and 1-2 in Pac-12 play, while Oregon State, the defending conference champions, improves to 3-0 in conference and 14-1 overall.

Sophomore center Kristine Anigwe had a game-high 26 points for the Bears while senior Courtney Range added ten points and nine rebounds. Freshman Mikayla Pivec scored a career-high 19 points to pace the visiting Beavers.

The first half of this Top 20 matchup saw end-to-end action and  ten lead changes. Oregon State got on the board first, but the Bears responded with back-to-back scores by Anigwe and junior forward Penina Davidson. Anigwe, who was held to just ten points in Cal's double-overtime loss to Arizona State, made her presence felt in the paint early, scoring eight of her 26 points in the opening quarter.

Tied 18-18 after the first quarter, Cal took a three-point lead midway through the second period off a strong drive by freshman Jaelyn Brown. However, Beavers responded and closed the half on an 8-0 to take a 34-29 lead at halftime.

Oregon State carried that momentum into the second half, opening the third quarter on an 8-2 run as the Bears' deficit grew to double-figures. The Beavers defense, which leads the conference in points per game allowed, held Cal to just eight points in the third quarter, its fewest scored in any quarter all season.

The Bears clawed back in the fourth quarter, drawing within seven midway through the period behind back-to-back layups by Brown, who finished with eight points and a career-high five steals. However, the Beavers held on to hand the Bears their second consecutive loss after starting the season 13-0.

"This conference will teach you lessons and humble you really fast," said Cal head coach Lindsay Gottlieb. "We've played two really great opponents back-to-back, and we've been in both games but just haven't done enough of the little things we need to do to win."

Oregon State's stifling defense held Cal to a season-low 56 points and 38.3 percent shooting from the field (23-60), the team's worst in any game this season. Cal committed only eight turnovers, but was out-rebounded 42-32, giving up 11 second-chance points.

The Bears will look to bounce back on Sunday, hosting Oregon at 1 pm PT at Haas Pavilion. Oregon went 9-9 in conference last season, splitting both meetings with the Bears. The Ducks were picked to finish seventh in both the preseason Pac-12 Media and Coaches polls, one spot behind Cal.

The Snow Day in the Bay event previously scheduled for Sunday's game has been rescheduled for January 22 due to inclement weather.
