BERKELEY – The Cal women's soccer team saw its seven-game unbeaten streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 1-0 decision to visiting Arizona. Freshman Jada Talley put the Wildcats (5-3-2, 2-1-0 Pac-12) on the scoreboard in the 75
th minute after she followed up her own rebound in the box. The Golden Bears (8-2-1, 1-1-1 Pac-12) were unable to equalize, suffering their first loss of the season in Berkeley.
With both teams looking to get back in the win column after Thursday's Pac-12 action, the game was hard-fought and fast-paced from the opening whistle. The Golden Bears got several quality looks early on, including a header by
Guro Bergsvand off a free kick that sailed just over the bar. Cal goalkeeper
Emily Boyd was active on the other end, breaking up several Wildcat one-v-one attempts in the late stages of the half with aggressive play off her line. Boyd, Cal's all-time leader with 31 career shutouts, ended the match with a season-high seven saves while Lainey Burdett made four saves for Arizona.
After a scoreless first 45 minutes, both sides upped the intensity in the second half, combining for 18 shots and 11 corners in the second period of play. Cal had a chance to break the game open in the 51
st minute when
Kayla Fong's shot from inside the box was deflected right into the path of
Luca Deza. The freshman midfielder reacted quickly, but her volley went over the crossbar. Just minutes later, Deza found
Abi Kim with a through-ball in the box, but Kim's attempt was saved by Burdett at the near post.
Arizona continued creating offensive looks of its own, forcing Boyd into several stops off free kicks and stringing together five corner kicks in a four minute span. The Wildcats' pressure finally paid off in the 75
th minute, when Talley took a shot from inside the box that beat Boyd. Cal freshman center back
Emily Smith was there to clear the ball off the line, but Talley stuck with the play, and followed up her own rebound to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
Arizona looked primed to double its advantage in the 83
rd minute, when Cal was called for a foul in the box defending a corner. The Wildcats were awarded a penalty kick, but Gabi Stoian's attempt went wide of the post. Cal continued to press numbers forward in the attack but was unable find the finishing touch, getting shutout for just the second time this season.
Â
Arizona held a 7-6 advantage in corners and outshot Cal, 16-13, the first time this season the Golden Bears have attempted fewer shots than their opponent. The Wildcats have now won the last three meetings between the teams, all of which have been one-goal games.
The Bears will look to bounce back on the road, taking on Colorado and Utah next week. The Buffaloes and Bears will meet at 2:30 pm PT on Thursday, October 5, a rematch of last season's double-overtime thriller in Berkeley. Cal then heads to Salt Lake City, squaring off against Utah at 1 p.m. PT on Sunday, October 8.Â
