BERKELEY – Four first-period goals from senior Luca Cupido helped the Cal men's water polo team jump out to an early lead and his teammates took it from there as the No. 3-ranked Bears rolled to a 20-6 victory over No. 16 San Jose State at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

One day after scoring six goals in an 18-8 win over No. 6 UC Irvine, Cupido continued his offensive assault right away against San Jose State. The senior from Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy scored three of Cal's first five goals and ended the first period with four, leading the Bears to an 8-1 advantage after just eight minutes.

While Cupido led the way in the first, Kevin Le Vine took over the playmaking in the second. Cal's goalkeeper made a number of big saves in the period and used the outlet pass to perfection on several occasions, directing an eight-minute stretch in which Cal (15-1) built its lead to 14-2 by halftime. Spencer Farrar was on the receiving end of several transition opportunities and scored three times in the period.

Cal went to its bench in the second half and San Jose State (9-8) got on a bit of a scoring roll itself as the Bears and Spartans played to a 3-3 draw in the third period. Fourth-period goals by Gianni Taranto, Chase Hamming and Mikey Williams finished the scoring and the Bears walked away with a weekend in which they held their two opponents to just 14 goals combined over two matches.

"I thought we played a pretty complete weekend," Cal head coach Kirk Everist said. "We played pretty well on defense and our offense obviously got rolling in both games, so I was pleased. It was kind of a chunky week of workouts with all the fire stuff but, all in all, I thought the guys mentally played really well and executed what we wanted to in both games. I'm pleased with the weekend."

Cupido led the way on the stat sheet, finishing with five goals to push his weekend total to 11 while also tallying three assists, three ejections earned and two steals. Johnny Hooper had another strong all-around effort, scoring twice and adding six assists and two steals. Farrar finished with three goals, Vassilis Tzavaras and Taranto each added two and Pedro Stellet, Williams, Hamming, Jordan Hoover, Cade Kruse and Odysseas Masmanidis scored one apiece.

Both Kevin Le Vine and Spencer Tagg saw time in the cage Sunday with Le Vine getting the start and making five saves. Tagg entered for the second half and made four saves. The Bears recorded 14 steals as a team, led by three from Hamming.

Cal returns to action on Saturday with the first of back-to-back matches in Southern California as the Bears take on UCLA at 11 a.m. The match will be broadcast live by Pac-12 Networks. The next day, Cal takes on Long Beach State at noon before returning home for a week off from game action. The Bears host USC on Nov. 4 in the final home game of the 2017 season.
