Bears Down Ducks On Senior Day

BERKELEY – The 16th-ranked Cal women's soccer team sent its seniors off in style, beating Oregon, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon in the Golden Bears' (13-2-1, 6-1-1 Pac-12) final home match of the regular season. Cal's offense came alive after a scoreless first half, tallying three goals a span of 11 minutes as Abi Kim, Miranda Nild, and Mia Corbin all found the back of the net. The Bears' defense held strong yet again, blanking the Ducks (7-9-0, 1-7-0 Pac-12) for Cal's 10th shutout of the season.

Cal has won five consecutive games, all via shutout, the Bears longest shutout streak of the season and the team's longest in conference play since 2005. Senior goalkeeper Emily Boyd pushed her career total to 36 clean sheets, taking sole possession of third all-time in Pac-12 women's soccer history.

The first half of Sunday's match saw both teams try to find a rhythm, combining for just three shots on frame in the first 45 minutes. The Golden Bears received great combination play in the midfield as Luca Deza, Daisy Cleverley, and Kelly Fitzgerald combined to create several promising buildups. However, the Ducks' defense remained disciplined, keeping the Bears off the scoreboard in the opening half.

However, there was no slowing Cal's offense over the final 45 minutes. The Golden Bears came out with energy and urgency in the attack, taking the lead in the 53rd minute. Fitzgerald played a ball over the top that hit an on-rushing Kim in stride. The sophomore striker took a touch inside and beat goalkeeper Halia Hinriksdottir to the far post for her seventh goal of the season. A member of the Under-20 United States Women's National Team, Kim leads Cal in scoring this season and has more than doubled her goal total from last season. Fitzgerald picked up her second assist in as many games, also teeing up the game-winner in Cal's 1-0 victory over Oregon State on Thursday.

Five minutes later, the Bears doubled their lead as Nild scored in the 58th minute. A corner kick from Fitzgerald found its way to Deza at the top of the box, who ripped a shot from just outside the 18. Deza's attempt was saved but Nild bounced on the rebound, putting it away from close range. It was the sixth goal of the season for Nild and her second in the last three games. Deza, a freshman from Belmont, California, picked up her team-leading fourth assist of the year on the play.

But Cal's offense was not done yet, as Corbin added an insurance tally in the 63rd minute. Off a buildup from the backline, freshman Emma Westin played a ball into the box for Kayla Fong, who laid it off for Corbin. The sophomore from Seattle one-timed her shot from just inside the 18 into the upper 90. A Pac-12 All-Freshman selection in 2016, Corbin now has two goals on the season, matching her total from her rookie campaign. Westin earned her third assist of the year while Fong now has a goal and two assists on the year, all coming in the last five games.
The Golden Bears outshot the Ducks 10-4 in the second half, and 14-8 overall on the afternoon. Hinriksdottir finished with five saves for Oregon, before Katelyn Carter subbed on to play the final 24 minutes in relief. Boyd made three saves to earn her 10th shutout of the season and eighth in the last 10 games.

Boyd and senior classmates Guro Bergsvand, Indigo Gibson, Haley Lukas, and Heather Walleigh were honored prior to Sunday's match, playing in their final regular season home game at Edwards Stadium.

The Bears will hit the road for the remainder of the regular season, closing out conference play with three consecutive road games. Cal heads down to Southern California next week for matches against No. 6 USC (Oct. 26) and No. 2 UCLA (Oct. 29). The Bears will then return to the Bay area for the regular season finale against top-ranked Stanford, squaring off against the Cardinal on the Farm at 7 p.m. PT. All three of Cal's remaining regular season games will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
