JCG’s Journal: Derby Week
With nonconference over, every game during conference becomes more crucial and important - it means that our focus has to increase as well. We started slow through our first three games of the season: we won one and lost two. There was a lot of frustration because we knew we were better than that, but we also knew we weren't working hard enough. Now, we have won six straight. All that comes with focusing on the right things and taking it game-by-game. We know not every game is going to be perfect, but the way we have been responding to every situation has been phenomenal. Whether we have been up a goal, tied or down a goal we've showed character and have pushed each other to the fullest.
Pac-12 is arguably one of the best, if not the best, conference in the nation. Every team we play is quality. This past weekend we came home with two important wins against two tough opponents in UCLA and San Diego State. The key to that was focusing on one game at a time and nothing else.
This weekend we face Stanford, who is ranked in the top 10. Our biggest and next door rivals are also 2-0 to start conference, which makes it a crucial game. Of course, this is a derby and the game brings a different type of environment; however, we prepare the same as we do for any other team. Being 2-0 doesn't matter anymore. All we have in our heads is taking in coach's game plan, recovering well and training hard. Their record doesn't matter, our record doesn't matter; it's another chance to come out and translate our hard work during training into the game.
I am proud to be part of this amazing group. Sunday will be an amazing environment for the players and the fans. It will be a great game that no one wants to miss. We will be looking forward to seeing all of our Cal family supporting us.
Go Bears!
