PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – After falling to top-ranked Connecticut on Friday night, the Cal women's basketball team bounced back on Sunday with an 89-79 victory over Brown University at the
Pizzitola Memorial Sports Center in Providence. The Golden Bears (2-1, 0-0 Pac-12) picked up their first road win of the season behind 28 points and a career-high 25 rebounds from junior forward
Kristine Anigwe, one rebound shy of tying Cal's single-game record and the second-most by any player in Division I basketball this season. Anigwe is the only Division I player in the last three seasons to have 25 points and 25 rebounds in the same game, and the first since former Minnesota star Amanda Zahui B. had 27 points and 27 rebounds against Michigan on February 21, 2015.
With the win, Cal improves to 9-0 all-time against Ivy League opponents while Brown (2-1, 0-0) suffered its first loss of the season despite connecting on 16 three-pointers. Brown junior Shayna Mehta led all scorers with 33 points, going 9-15 from beyond the arc.

Penina Davidson added 15 points and 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season and the third of her career. Three other Golden Bears scored in double-figures, with a career-high 12 points from
Kianna Smith and 11 points apiece from
Jaelyn Brown and
Asha Thomas.
The first meeting ever between the teams was a back-and-forth affair that saw 12 lead changes. Brown came out of the game shooting lights out from beyond the arc, connecting on seven threes in the first quarter. Mehta, a San Francisco native, scored 14 of her game-high 33 points in the opening quarter as the teams were tied 25-25 after the first quarter.
While the Browns were hitting from beyond the arc, Cal got to work down low, outscoring the hosts 46-22 in the paint. Anigwe, who registered the 24
th game of her career with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds went 11-19 from the field and also matched her career high with three steals.
Cal used a 10-0 run midway through the third quarter to take the lead for good, and warded off a Brown comeback attempt with a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter. Thomas, a 5'4" point guard who has started every game in her Cal career, helped secure the victory for the Bears, scoring or assisting six of Cal's final seven points. Mikayla Cowling had eight points and eight assists, two-shy of her career best.
The Golden Bears return to Haas Pavilion next week, hosting the annual Cal Classic. The four-team tournament kicks off on Friday, November 24, with the Golden Bears hosting Manhattan College at 2 p.m. PT. Friday's second game will feature Coppin State and No. 23 Missouri in a 4 p.m. PT tipoff. The winners from Friday's game will meet at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the Cal Classic championship game, with the consolation slated for Noon PT.
