Cal Takes Series Against SDSU

BERKELEYCalifornia finished its penultimate regular season home match in decisive fashion on late Thursday afternoon as aggressive offense thwarted visiting San Diego State at Edwards Stadium.

In the 70th minute, junior Spencer Held blasted in his second goal of the season to give the Bears a 1-0 advantage and their final margin for the night. Impressively, Held knocked in the game winner within 30 seconds on stepping on the field as a sub for forward Paul Salcedo-Borrego as teammate Josh Morton assisted on the play.

"It was great coming in and I saw Josh winding up and I was able to get my head on it and knock it through," said Held. "It was relieving for me to get a goal in and we needed this for the team. We have to keep it rolling."

With an NCAA bid on the line, Cal opened the match dominating the field on both sides of the ball. The Bears outshot the Aztecs 15-6 in the first period but were unable to capitalize on their efforts as both teams went into the break tied 0-0.

In its second 1-0 victory over SDSU this season, Cal finished with a season high 26 shots and limited its Pac-12 opponent to a mere seven. The Bears also tabbed a season best with nine shots on goal.

Cal celebrates Senior Day on Sunday as it hosts UCLA at 1 p.m. (PT). In their final home game of the regular season, the Bears say farewell to departing members Jose Carrera-Garcia (Ontario, Calif.), Matt Locklear (Irvine, Calif.), Jorge Miranda (Van Nuys, Calif.), Josh Morton (Brentwood, Calif.), Ugo Rebecchini (Rome, Italy), Paul Salcedo-Borrego (Inglewood, Calif.) and Aravind Sivakumar (Cupertino, Calif.). The game will broadcast on the Pac-12 network.
