BERKELEY – Senior
Ashten Smith-Gooden recorded a season-high 13 kills in her final collegiate match and fellow senior
Antzela Dempi had 10 kills and two blocks to wrap up her career, but the Cal volleyball team fell to No. 4 Stanford 25-21, 25-16, 25-17 on Senior Night at Haas Pavilion on Saturday night to conclude the 2017 season.
Freshman
Mima Mirkovic had five kills and 12 digs and junior
Carmen Annevelink added five digs as well.
Dempi didn't record an ace for just the sixth time this season and finished the year with 50, which ranks eighth on Cal's all-time single-season list. She finished the season as the Bears' leader in kills at 2.98 kills per set.
The Bears (13-18, 4-16 Pac-12) made a run at the end of the first set to make it close, trimming a 22-16 deficit to 23-21 after a kill by Smith-Gooden. Smith-Gooden had two other kills during the stretch while Dempi and middle blocker
Caihla Petiprin teamed up for a block.
The match marked the final one at Cal for six seniors – Smith-Gooden, Dempi, Petiprin, outside hitter
Christine Alftin, and defensive specialists
Jessica Gaffney and
Gaby deGuzman. The seniors were honored before the match in a special on-court ceremony.
Cal will return four starters for the 2018 season – opposite hitter
Carmen Annevelink, outside hitter
Mima Mirkovic, middle blocker
Preslie Anderson and setter
Isabel Potter. The Bears also welcome two highly regarded high school outside hitters – No. 50 "Senior Ace" Rachel Ahrens of Trabuco Canyon and Darian Clark of Phoenix, Ariz.
Gaffney's athletic career at Cal is not over, however. She will finish out her beach volleyball career with the Bears in the spring. Mirkovic also plays for Cal's beach program.
