Smith Named Pac-12 Freshman Of The Week
SAN FRANCISCO – Coming off a career day on Friday at the Cal Classic, Golden Bears guard Kianna Smith has been named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. Stanford forward Alanna Smith was selected as the Pac-12 Player of the Week.
This is the first Pac-12 weekly honor for Smith, who becomes the first Cal player to earn the accolade since Jaelyn Brown earned Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors on February 27, 2017.
A rookie from Moreno Valley, California, Smith was named to the Cal Classic All-Tournament Team after averaging 13 points and 8.5 assists per game over the weekend, while shooting 62.5 percent from the field. Smith registered her first career double-double in Cal's 87-66 victory over Manhattan, posting career-highs in both points (17) and assists (12). Smith's 12 assists are the most by any Cal player in the last two season and stand as the second-highest single-game total by any Pac-12 player this season. The 2017 McDonalds All American went 4-5 from three-point range against the Jaspers, helping the Golden Bears set a program record with 17 three-pointers in the game. Smith added nine points and five assists in Saturday's championship game vs No. 23 Missouri, committing just one turnover in 33 minutes of action.
A 6'0" guard, Smith has started the last four games for the 24th-ranked Bears, scoring double-figures in two of her last three outings. Smith is averaging 4.4 assists per game this season, the most by freshman in the conference, and ranks second among Pac-12 rookies with a 51.4 field goal percentage.
Smith and the Golden Bears will be back in action on Thursday, hosting Seattle University at 11:30 a.m. PT in Cal's fourth annual "School Haas Rock" game. The midday contest is part of a broader educational event drawing elementary and middle school-age children from across the Bay Area.
