Anigwe Named To Naismith Watch List
ATLANTA – Cal junior
Kristine Anigwe has been announced as one of 50 players to watch for the Citizen Naismith Player of the Year Trophy, the Atlanta Tipoff Club revealed on Wednesday. The Citizen Naismith Player of the Year is awarded annually to the top player in women's college basketball and Anigwe is one of seven players from the Pac-12 named to the preseason list. A midseason list of 30 candidates will be announced later this winter.
The full list of nominees can be found
here.
Anigwe, who has also been named to the preseason watch lists for the John R. Wooden Award and the Katrina McClain award, has earned preseason Naismith recognition for the second consecutive season. A unanimous Preseason All-Pac-12 Selection, Anigwe leads Cal in both scoring and rebounding again this season, averaging 14.4 points per game and 9.4 rebounds per game through Cal's first five outings of the season. The 6'4" center/forward had pulled down an eye-popping 25 rebounds in Cal's 89-79 victory at Brown on November 19, finishing one shy of the program's single-game record. Anigwe added 28 points in the win over the Brown Bears, becoming the first Division I player in the last three seasons to have 25 points and 25 rebounds in the same game.
A two-time All-America Honorable Mention, Anigwe led the Bears in scoring (21.0 points per game), rebounding (9.3 rebounds per game), field goal percentage (56.6 percent), and blocked shots (2.1 blocks per game) last season, ranking in the Top-50 nationally in all four categories.
Anigwe and the Golden Bears, ranked 24
th in the latest AP Poll, will host Seattle University on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in the fourth annual "School Haas Rock" game. The midday contest is part of a broader educational event that draws youth from across the Bay Area and provides early exposure to college and higher learning.
