Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Cal Women's Soccer

Cal Falls To Top-Ranked Stanford

STANFORD -  The Cal women's soccer team dropped its final game of the regular season, falling to Stanford, 1-0, on Friday night at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. Senior goalkeeper Emily Boyd made a career-high 14 saves for the Golden Bears (13-5-1, 6-4-1 Pac-12), who suffered their first loss on the Farm since 2011. The 2017 Pac-12 Champions, Stanford (18-1-0, 11-0-0 Pac-12) scored the game's only goal in the 43rd minute, as freshman Catarina Macario finished from close range.

The final game of the regular season pitted Stanford, one of the best offenses in the nation, against Cal, who boasts one of the top defenses in Division I. Both teams came out with energy from the start, with end-to-end action in the opening minutes. Stanford, who entered the match averaging 3.83 goals per game this season, was aggressive in the attack, taking 24 shots in the opening half. However, Cal's defense proved hard to crack, blocking shots all over the pitch and receiving stellar play from Boyd in the net.

The Seattle native made numerous highlight-reel saves and commanded the area all evening, while tallying a career-high 14 saves. With today's performance, Boyd now has 290 saves during her time in Berkeley, breaking the program record of 279 previously held by Emily Krueger. Boyd also holds the program record with 36 career shutouts, the third most by any player in Pac-12 women's soccer history.

Stanford nearly broke the game open in the 19th minute when the Cardinal got a shot off from just outside the six-yard box. Boyd got a fingertip on it and was able to push the shot off the post and freshman center back Emily Smith was there to clear away the shot off the rebound.

The Cardinal finally found the back of the net in the 43rd minute, when Madison Haley and Jordan DiBiasi combined at the edge of the box, before playing a ball through to Macario. The Pac-12's leading scorer with 14 goals, Macario one-timed a shot across her body that beat Boyd to the far post.

Yet Cal was not deterred by the deficit and the Golden Bears continued to battle in the second half, keeping the Cardinal off the scoresheet in the final 45 minutes. Boyd and the Bears' backline continued their organized and aggressive play, breaking up through balls by the  Cardinal and getting in front of shot attempts.

Cal also continued to push for an equalizer, with strong runs in the attack. Cal put three of its four shot attempts on target on the evening, and had several dangerous crosses into the box that were broken up before they could find the runner.

The Golden Bears finished fifth in the Pac-12 standings with 19 points, an improvement from last season's sixth-place finish and the 14th consecutive year Cal has finished in the top half of the table.

The Bears will find out their NCAA Tournament fate on Monday, November 6 when the NCAA announces the field of 64 teams for the 2017 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship. Cal has reached the NCAA Tournament each of the last 13 seasons and made 24 trips overall in program history. The Golden Bears entered the weekend ranked 23rd in RPI. Cal played Pepperdine to a 1-1 draw in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament last season, before the Wave advanced to the Second Round on penalties, 3-2.
