Dempi Named Pac-12 All-Academic First Team
BERKELEY – Senior right side hitter
Antzela Dempi was named to the Pac-12 All-Academic First Team on Thursday, giving the Cal volleyball program a first team selection for three consecutive seasons.
Senior defensive specialist
Jessica Gaffney was named to the second team while junior right side hitter
Carmen Annevelink, senior middle blocker
Caihla Petiprin and junior setter
Mackenzie Albrecht earned honorable mention.
Dempi, a business administration major in the prestigious Haas School of Business, has a 3.83 cumulative grade point average. Last month, she was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team.
Dempi is on pace to become the first Cal player ever to lead the Pac-12 in aces. She finished the 2017 season with 50, which ranks eighth on the Bears' all-time single-season rankings. She also led Cal in kills and ranks 10
th in the conference in points per set.
Former Cal libero Maddy Kerr earned Pac-12 All-Academic First Team honors in each of the past two seasons. The only other Cal volleyball player to ever garner Pac-12 All-Academic First Team recognition was Robin Rostratter in 2011.
Gaffney, who made 14 starts at libero this season and finished third on the team at 2.93 digs per set, is a Public Health major with a 3.68 GPA. She was also an All-WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention selection at USF as a sophomore before transferring to Cal.
Annevelink earned Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention for the second consecutive season. She has a 3.40 cumulative GPA as an Integrative Biology major. Annevelink had a breakout season on the court for the Bears, finishing in a tie for second on the team with 2.47 kills per set.
Albrecht also is a student in the Haas School of Business with a 3.55 cumulative GPA. She played in 22 matches (18 starts) before an injury sidelined her for the rest of the season.
Petiprin is a Public Health major with a 3.42 cumulative GPA. She played in all but four matches and made 16 starts while leading the team at 0.74 blocks per set.
To be eligible for All-Academic consideration, student-athletes must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and play in at least 50 percent of the team's competitions. Freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the recognition.
