Cal-Oregon State Postgame Quotes
California Head Coach Justin Wilcox
General thoughts on the game:
"Really proud of our team today. I thought they competed really hard, and I thought we played with an edge and chip on our shoulders. They came out since Monday and practiced well, paid attention to the details and all of the things that mattered, and we came out and executed pretty well. Offensively, we stayed in rhythm most of the game against a team that is playing really emotionally-charged football, playing good football. They've got good players and good schemes. I'm really proud of our offense and how they executed today and, defensively, defending that offense with the amount of shifts in motion and deceptives. Obviously, a couple of them got us early, but I thought the guys really settled down and played with good discipline and effort in running to the football and got good balance when we needed to. We were fortunate to get field goals when we needed to."
Â
On slowing down Oregon State's run game featuring Ryan Nall:
"Really good job by the coaching staff on defense in preparing the guys and then the kids went out and executed. I thought we played really hard. We were going to be committed to stopping the run and we played a lot of heavy-run fronts. He [Ryan Nall] hit some runs and he is going to earn some. He's a really good back. He's a big guy and they have good schemes, like I said. A lot of misdirections, so they will get people out of their gaps. They [Oregon State] know what they're doing, but I thought our guys competed really well. They also communicated, which is a big part of it with all of that shift in motion, ran to the football and played good defense."
Â
On Matt Anderson day and breaking a long-standing record:
"He had a huge day. I'm really proud of him. He started off the year a little shaky to his standards anyway but he really came back and has been solid for us. I know it was a big deal to the guys on the sidelines to help him get that [record breaking kick]. We're proud of him, and he's obviously played a ton and done a lot here and, like you said, the company he keeps in terms of the scoring is pretty impressive."
Â
On Laird's big day and emergence this season:
"He's a little bit new to the scene this season in terms of the production he's getting, but Pat is a special guy and he works extremely hard. He's a talented guy and has good intangibles of vision, balance and some of those things that are hard to measure when you talk about height, weight and speed that everybody is so interested in, but there's more to it than that and I think you see that with Pat. He's got all of those intangible things."
California Players
Ross Bowers, QB
On Patrick Laird's 200+ yard performance:
"It's awesome to watch, but it's nothing new. I know the numbers are a little flashier than some other games. He's a really good player and great leader. It's funny, because we almost expect him to do that now."
Â
On being one game closer to bowl eligibility:
"It's great to be in a position to earn ourselves another game. This bye week is going to be huge for us. We can get in the mindset that 'it's just a bye week,' but we have to get significantly better in whatever the little things are and then get ready for our next game. We have our eyes on that sixth win for sure, but we're taking it one day at a time still."
Â
Matt Anderson, K
On setting Cal's all-time scoring record on a 45-yard field goal:
"The team was nice enough to give me the football with the date on it; it's a good memento to have for the rest of my life. It's tough to measure it right now, but it's such an honor. It's so humbling and I'm so grateful. It was Doug Brien's record, who I've gotten to know. He's a phenomenal person and an amazing kicker – so it was an honor that it was his. To do it on Senior Day and the last time I'll ever play in California Memorial Stadium, it's kind of emotional. To do it in front of the home crowd, my family and friends, makes it even more special."

Raymond Davison III, ILB
On winning final home game on Senior Day:
"It feels really good. We put a lot of work in during practice. (James) Looney will tell you, we practice hard. It's frustrating when you've been practicing so hard and end up losing. This week we were like, 'We're not going to change what we do, but we have to find a way to win.' So we were going to scratch and claw, especially the seniors. I'm pretty emotional – I was almost about to cry today. You felt it at the beginning of the game that I was going to be emotional, but I knew we were going to have to find a way to win the game. I'm glad we did."
Â
James Looney, DE
On winning final home game on Senior Day:
"It was extra special because it was the last one in Memorial. Berkeley has been the greatest experience of my life. I thank God for everything that He's blessed me with and to be able to go to a prestigious university. I've been around great guys. I played with Jared Goff, a number one overall pick in the NFL draft. I've played with some of my best friends like
Aisea Tongilava and
Chris Palmer. You just grow a bond with these guys and they become your brothers and your family. The program is going the right way and it's good to get back on the rise. We're going to enjoy this."
Oregon State Interim Head Coach Cory Hall
General Comments:
"Obviously, defensively, neither team got off to a great start. They did a great job mixing their quarterbacks and the run and pass options off of both. I think when it got to 31-14 a few of our guys took a deep breathe and relaxed too much and that's on all of us collectively."
Â
On The Targeting Penalties:
"Things happen. Once those rulings are made, you have to live with it. It's not just Oregon State. It's happened all over the country. It's real controversial this season. I get it. Rules are rules. You lead with the crown of your head and there are going to be repercussions. I'm not going to cry over spilled milk. We have the next man up. It didn't stop us from executing our defense and calling plays. It's just trying to put those players in the best possible situation to be successful."
Â
On The Team's Energy Level:
"It's never a player's fault. I don't believe in that. Their mindsets, their hearts, their preparation – it's where it needs to be. When plays are there to be made, we just have to make our plays."
Â
On Mistakes The Team Made:
"That's been the story of the whole season. You can't hurt yourself. You can't shoot yourself in the foot. Sometimes we do that; we do that as a team. It's not one individual. It's not one side of the ball. It's as a team. And the team on the other sideline has their own issues and they do the same thing. At the end of the day, I just want to praise Cal for what they did and what they accomplished. We fell short."
Â
On Thomas Tyner's Development:
"Thomas has been very effective. Thomas Tyner has been a huge positive for our offense. When a player comes in and he's been retired from football for a lengthy amount of time, it's a process getting him back and getting him going. I think you're starting to see Thomas Tyner come into his own. Looking ahead, we plan on him playing a lot of football. He's going to be a major factor in the offense for us in the run game."
Â
On Oregon State's First Touchdown:
"The boys get excited about installing a trick play every week. It was executed just how we practiced it. It was designed and it was well-executed. At the end of the day, it's about our players having fun, and they had fun with that one."
