BERKELEY – Cal's seven-game winning streak came to an end on the final day of the calendar year, as No. 11 UCLA topped 20
th-ranked Cal, 82-46, on Sunday at Haas Pavilion. With the loss, Cal (10-3, 1-1 Pac-12) falls to 1-1 in conference play while the Bruins (10-3, 1-1 Pac-12) bounced back after a Friday night defeat at Stanford. UCLA forward Monique Billings led all scorers with 20 points while
Kristine Anigwe had a team-high 15 points for the Golden Bears, adding 10 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double.
Asha Thomas added 12 points of the Bears while senior
Mikayla Cowling had 11 points and a season-high nine rebounds.
In what has become one of the most spirited rivalries in the Pac-12, the Bears came out strong, opening the game on a 7-0 run and connecting on three of their first four attempts from the floor. However the Bruins, who were picked to win the conference in the 2017 Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll, responded quickly and closed the quarter on a 13-4 run, taking a 19-15 lead after the first 10 minutes of play. Led by 2017 Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year Jordin Canada, UCLA's defense forced the Bears into eight turnovers in the opening quarter and 24 total turnovers for the game, which the Bruins converted into 21 points.
Turnovers and cold shooting would plague the Bears the remainder of the afternoon, as Cal was held to a season-low 46 points on 16-56 shooting from the field. After connecting on seven three-pointers in Friday night's victory over USC, Cal went 1-12 from beyond the arc on Sunday, the lone make coming courtesy of Thomas.
Coming off a 16-point, 13-rebound outing against USC, Anigwe registered her second double-double in as many games. Anigwe leads the conference in rebounding this season, averaging 9.1 rebounds per game, and grabbed a game-high six offensive boards. Cowling was also active on the glass, setting a new season-best with nine rebounds. The senior from Benicia, California added 11 points on 4-8 shooting, scoring in double-figures for the fifth consecutive game.
Ranked 11
th in the AP Poll, UCLA shot 49.3 percent (34-69) from the floor and had three different players score in double-figures. Billings led the effort with a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double while Canada had 16 points and nine assists and Kennedy Burke added 10 points and five assists off the bench.
The Bears will now hit the road for their first road trip of Pac-12 play, heading south for games against Arizona State and Arizona. Cal will square off against the Sun Devils (11-3, 2-0 Pac-12) on Friday, January 5, before heading to Tucson for a January 7 meeting with the Wildcats (4-9, 0-2 Pac-12).
