Utes Snap Bears Win Streak

BERKELEY –  Cal's three-game home winning streak came to an end on Friday night, falling to Utah, 73-64, at Haas Pavilion. The Utes (15-9, 4-9 Pac-12) completed the season sweep of the Golden Bears (17-8, 5-8 Pac-12), and handed Cal its first home loss since a 54-45 defeat to No. 18 Arizona State on January 20.

Sophomore center Kristine Anigwe led the Bears with a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds while junior guard Mikayla Cowling added 16 points, scoring in double-figures for the third consecutive game. Cal freshman Jaelyn Brown had 10 points off the bench, her most in any conference game this season and her third double-digit performance of season.

The visiting Utes had four players in double-figures, led by 16 points from Malia Nawahine and a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double from forward Emily Potter.

Coming off a weekend sweep against UCLA and USC, the Bears jumped out to an early lead and held an 18-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter. However Cal's offense went cold in the second quarter, shooting just 30 percent (3-10) from the field. Utah's offense on the other hand, came alive, shooting 60 percent (9-15) from the floor and going 3-3 from beyond the arc in the second period as the Utes took an eight-point advantage into the half.

On the night, Cal shot just 36.7 percent from the field (22-60), its second-lowest field goal percentage in any game this season. The Bears shot a season-low 34.5 percent (20-58) in a January 15 road loss to the Utes.

Cal continued to battle in the second half, drawing within two points when Brown hit a jumper with 2:12 remaining in the third quarter. Brown -- who had just six points in the previous three games combined -- was 3-6 on the the night from the floor and a perfect 4-4 from the foul line. However the Utes responded with a 7-2 run of their own to close the quarter and led by at least six points for the remainder of the game.

Anigwe, who played with three fouls for the majority of the second half, scored her 22 points in just 33 minutes of action. It was the 15th 20-point performance of the season for the 6'4" center - who was one of two underclassmen named to the Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 - trailing only Washington's Kelsey Plum for the most by any player in the Pac-12.

While the Bears held a 37-33 advantage on the boards, Utah outscored Cal 30-22 in the paint and 8-4 on the fastbreak. Cal had scored ten or more points on the fastbreak in each of its previous three games.

"They beat us today," said Cal head coach Lindsay Gottlieb. "Utah always plays us well, they were ready—I thought our effort was good, our preparation was good. I thought they went on a couple runs that really hurt us, they hurt us in transition, and they made some threes that they haven't made in a few weeks."We fought, but didn't have enough—it's disappointing, but not discouraging in the big picture. We'll be ready to go on Sunday."

Cal will be back in action on Sunday, hosting Colorado at 3 pm PT at Haas Pavilion. The Bears beat the Buffaloes, 65-53, on January 13 in Boulder as Cal erased a 12-point deficit and Anigwe scored 25 of her game-high 29 points in the second half. The Bears' second annual Snow Day in the Bay will be held on Sunday, featuring more than 3,000 gallons of snow, a face painter, games, and activities for all ages. Tickets are jsut $1 for age 17 and under

In conjunction with Play4Kay weekend, a silent auction will be held at Sunday's game, with various jerseys, autographed balls, and gift baskets up for bid. Proceeds from the auction benefit the Kay Yow Cancer fund and Rebounds for Rama, a fundraising effort started this fall to benefit former Cal women's basketball player Rama N'diaye, who was diagnosed with breast cancer this season at the age of 29.
