COLUMBUS, Ohio - Despite a first-career hat trick by
Kate Mattimore, a personal-best three assists by
Meredith Haggerty and a hat trick by
Jena Fritts, the California women's lacrosse team lost to Ohio State, 14-8, Sunday afternoon in Columbus. The Golden Bears fell to 1-3 on the season.
The Buckeyes jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the game before Mattimore netted her first goal of the day. Haggerty assisted on Mattimore's first two goals and later assisted on a tally by Fritts, who boasted her own hat trick after totaling a career-best six goals at Butler on Friday, giving her nine goals for the weekend.
Mattimore's second goal made it 6-3, Ohio State, with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. Mattimore completed her hat trick by scoring the first goal of the second half, make it 7-4, Ohio State. The Buckeyes scored the next three straight goals to take control of the contest. Cal battled Ohio State tough the whole game, cutting the deficit down to four with 12 and a half minutes left in the second half.
In goal,
Jenny Wilkens posted another double-digit save performance with a season-best of 14 on the day, which marked the eighth time in her career and second time this season that she's made at least 10 stops. She also paced her team with 4 ground balls.
Freshman
Noelani Murayama collected a goal and an assist. It was her second goal this season, and both of her goals have come on free-position shots.
Caroline Schlegel caused three turnovers while
Alexandra Robertson caused two, and
Sara Nolte secured three draws.
The Bears return to Berkeley next week for a five-game homestand, which begins with a battle against Michigan on Friday, March 3, at 5 p.m. from Kabam Field at California Memorial Stadium.
