â˘Â Morikawa Cracks Top 10 â Collin Morikawa is in the top 10 for the first time in 2016-17 and is Cal's highest ranked player. In the latest rankings, Morikawa checks in at season bests of No. 9 according to Golfstat and No. 14 by Golfweek/Sagarin. He is also currently the No. 4 amateur player in the world according to the Scratch Players World Amateur Ranking while the World Amateur Golf Ranking lists him at No. 11. In addition, Morikawa boasts a 69.67 stroke average that is tied for seventh nationally and leads Cal, while he has five top-10 showings in his six 2016-17 stroke-play events and has finished in the top 20 at each, leading all Cal golfers five times.

â˘Â Morikawa On The Ben Hogan Award Watch List â Collin Morikawa is on the watch list for The Ben Hogan Award presented by Konica Minolta annually to the top men's Division I, II or III, NAIA or NJCAA college golfer talking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during the past 12-month period beginning with the 2016 NCAA Championships and running through the 2017 NCAA Regionals. In addition to his collegiate prowess, during the period he has also won the Sunnehanna Amateur last June, tied for second after reaching a playoff playing as an amateur at his first Web.com Tour event at the Air Capital Classic presented by Aetna also in June, reached the round of 16 at the U.S. Amateur in August and made his PGA TOUR debut when he played as an amateur at the Safeway Open in October.

â˘Â Spring Lineup Debut â Ben Doyle will be in the Cal lineup for the first time in the spring of 2017 at the Southern Highlands Collegiate. He was last in the lineup at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational last October.
â˘Â Chun In Charge âÂ
Walter Chun is in his first season as Cal's Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf after he was named to the position on Aug. 1, 2016, replacing former head coach
Steve Desimone, who retired at the end of the 2015-16 campaign after 37 seasons at the helm. Chun is in his 20th season associated with the program previously serving as associate head coach (2009-16), assistant coach (2004-09) and an administrative assistant (2002-04) after his playing career for the Golden Bears (1997-2002).

â˘Â Upcoming Schedule â Following the Southern Highlands Collegiate the Golden Bears' regular-season spring schedule will continue at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational (Mar. 18-19) and Western Intercollegiate (Apr. 8-9). The postseason starts with the Pac-12 Championships (Apr. 28-30) followed by the NCAA Regionals (May 15-17) and NCAA Championships (May 26-31).

â˘Â Season Rewind â Before finishing 14th at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate in its most recent event, Cal had posted its top two finishes of the season in its first two tournaments of the spring, tying for fifth at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate after opening the spring with a sixth-place showing at the Arizona Intercollegiate. Cal had finishes of either eighth (Gopher Invitational, Maui Jim Invitational) or tied for eighth (Alister MacKenzie Invitational) in each its first three events of the 2016 fall schedule before taking 15th at the prestigious Tavistock Collegiate Invitational. The Golden Bears finished the fall by reaching the consolation finals of the Cypress Point Invitational.

â˘Â Morikawa Makes PGA TOUR Debut âÂ
Collin Morikawa made his PGA TOUR debut when he played as an amateur at the Safeway Open In October of 2016 and missed the cut by two strokes (74-69 â 143, -1). Morikawa missed the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational to play in the Safeway Open to mark the only Cal event he has missed in his collegiate career.

â˘Â Tournament Information â The 42nd edition of the Southern Highlands Collegiate hosted by UNLV is scheduled to be played Monday-Wednesday, Mar. 6-8, 2017, at the Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nev. The 15-team field is scheduled to play 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament on each of the event's three days with tee times off the No. 1 and No. 10 holes scheduled to begin each day at 9 am PT.
â˘Â The Field â The 15-team field includes Arizona State, Cal, Florida, Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, San Diego State, SMU, Stanford, TCU, Texas Tech, UNLV and USC. Florida is currently the second-ranked team in all three major national polls (Bushnell Golfweek Division I Coaches Poll, Golfstat, Golfweek/Sagarin). Illinois (Bushnell) and Oklahoma State (Golfweek/Sagain) are ranked as high as No. 3 with the Cowboys coming off a victory at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate. USC (No. 4 Bushnell), Texas Tech (No. 7 Bushnell) and Stanford (No. 8 Bushnell) bring the number of top-10 teams in the field to six while a total of 10 squads are currently in the top 25 of at least one poll.
â˘Â Weather Forecast â Sunny or mostly sunny weather with no chance of precipitation is forecast is for all three days of the Southern Highlands Collegiate. The high temperatures will rise from the low 60's on Monday to the high 60's on Tuesday and high 70's on Wednesday. Winds are forecast from 6-9 miles per hour from the north or northeast each day while the humidity in the teens is forecasted all three days of the event.

â˘Â Cal's Southern Highlands Collegiate History â Cal posted its lone victory at the Southern Highlands Collegiate in 2013 when current PGA TOUR member Michael Kim led the way as one of four players that reached a playoff for individual medalist honors.
Collin Morikawa is the lone Cal player in the 2017 lineup to have played in the event previously when he participated in 2016 for the Golden Bears and finished in a tie for 27th for a team that was 11th.
