SAN DIEGO - Trailing 11-6 in the second half, California scored the next seven consecutive goals to take a 13-11 lead with two minutes left in regulation. However, San Diego State scored two quick goals in the final 90 seconds to send the game into overtime, and the Aztecs eventually won, 14-13, Sunday afternoon on the San Diego State campus.
The Golden Bears fell to 2-8, 0-2 on the year.
Elizabeth Pellechi paced the Bears with five points on four goals and an assist, while
Jenny Wilkens recorded another double-digit save performance with 10 stops on the day. Six of her saves came in the second half.
Susie Ropp got the scoring going at the outset of the contest, tallying Cal's first two goals of the game. But the Aztecs jumped out to an early 4-2 lead with all four goals coming off of free-position shots.
The Aztecs would later extend the lead to 6-2 with 10 minutes left in the first half before back-to-back goals by Pellechi got the Bears back in the game. SDSU took an 8-4 lead in the locker room for halftime.
At the 21:17 mark in the second half, SDSU scored and led, 11-6. Then the Bears took total control of the game, scoring seven consecutive goals in the span of 20 minutes. Haggerty scored twice in that stretch, while Pellechi garnered a goal and an assist.
Cal couldn't hold on to the lead in regulation, though, as SDSU scored at the 1:12 mark and the 0:39 mark to send the game into overtime. The Aztecs scored the gamewinner in the second half of the first overtime period.
Jena Fritts also scored two goals for the Bears, while Haggerty added three caused turnovers and
Elizabeth Koehler scooped three ground balls.
Wilkens now boasts 12 career double-digit save performances and six this season. In addition, she has made at least eight saves in 20 of 25 career games played.
Today's loss is Cal's third one-goal loss this season, and it was the first overtime contest in 2017.
The Bears will stay in San Diego for a neutral site contest against Brown on Wednesday, March 29, at 5 p.m.
