Bears Produce High Marks at Outdoor Opener
BERKELEY –
McKay Johnson certainly made an impression in his first competition as a Golden Bear. The freshman from Fresno won two events in his debut at the Cal Outdoor Opener Saturday at Edwards Stadium, including a school freshman-record throw of 61-4.75 in the shot put.
Johnson's top mark came on his third of six attempts and outdistanced teammate and runner-up
Malik McMorris, who came through with a distance of 57-0.25. He broke a 16-year-old record for Cal freshmen – 60-9.25 set by Rhuben Williams in 2001 – and the mark puts him No. 7 on Cal's all-time performer list. Johnson's other victory in the afternoon came with a throw of 174-2 in the discus.
"We had the threat of rain, it was windy and it was cold," Director of Track & Field
Tony Sandoval said. "Despite all of that, I think the teams that were here competed hard. We were excited about what happened today. It was a good team effort and I thought things went well, and we'll build upon that."
Overall, the Bears posted 17 event wins on the day.
Destiny Parker got her morning off to a strong start by setting a PR on her way to a victory in the women's hammer. Her mark of 192-5 also put her sixth on Cal's all-time list in the event. In the men's hammer, the Bears went 1-2 with
Marshall Godsil throwing 178-0 and
Matt Esparza going 172-9.
The women's 400 meters proved to be an exciting race as Cal's
Jackie Chandler overtook Mikaela Adolphus of UC Davis at the wire and claimed victory by 0.04 seconds in 56.30.
Jayla Scholis nearly hit her PR in the 100m, holding off teammate
Jackie Patterson and UC Davis' Kierra Davis to win in a wind-aided 11.86 seconds.
Diab Davis gave the Bears a sweep of the 100 with a winning time of 10.84 in the men's race.
In field events, Cal other winners came from
Terence Wilson in the men's javelin (181-1),
Lauren Martinez in the women's pole vault (13-1.50) and
Ashley Anderson in the women's triple jump (40-6.25w).
On the track,
Ellis Newton claimed the men's 1500m in 3:52.58, just holding off teammate
Andrew Burkhardt (3:53.12).
Robert Brandt (8:20.00) and
Marissa Williams (9:45.16) gave the Bears a sweep of the men's and women's 3000m, respectively, while
Cole Johnson (47.98) and
Jackie Chandler (56.30) helped Cal take both the men's and women's 400m. Cal's women also prevailed in the 400m relay,
Morgan Robertson won the women's 100m hurdles in 14.81, and
Max Leach, running unopposed, covered the men's 2000m steeplechase in 6:03.00
Three Bears will be in action next weekend at the NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas –
Ashtyn Davis (60m hurdles),
Thomas Joyce (mile) and
Garrett Corcoran (3000m). Cal's next outdoor competition is March 17-18 at the Hornet Open in Sacramento.
