BERKELEY - Fresh off scoring 17 goals in its last game, the California women's lacrosse team (1-5, 0-1) hopes to keep the strong offensive play going when the Golden Bears face William & Mary this week, continuing their five-game homestand.

The Tribe have won four of the five previous meetings against the Bears, with the most recent contest between the two coming in 2007.

Last Sunday against Saint Joseph's, the Hawks won an offensive shootout, 18-17. Elizabeth Pellechi and Jena Fritts each scored four goals, while Meredith Haggerty collected seven draw controls. Susie Ropp and Kirsten Swanson also garnered their first career hat tricks in the offensive showcase. Ropp and Fritts paced the Bears with six points each as Ropp tallied three assists and Fritts finished with two. Pellechi also scooped up four draws.

Jenny Wilkens made 18 saves during the trip to Butler and Ohio State, including a season-best 14 stops at Ohio State on Feb. 26. It was her eighth career double-digit save performance and her second this season. Wilkens made numerous big saves to keep the Bears in the game late in the second half. She also collected four ground balls against the Buckeyes. In Cal's 19-7 win at Butler, Wilkens posted four saves while only allowing three goals in 47 minutes of work.

Jena Fritts is Cal's leading scorer with 21 points on 15 goals and six assists. The points and goals rank eighth in the MPSF. Fritts, who paced the Bears in points and assists a year ago, scored a career-best six goals at Butler on Feb. 24. That total tied for second best in school single-game history. Two days later, Fritts notched another hat trick at Ohio State, giving her nine goals for the weekend.

Like Fritts, Mattimore also recorded a hat trick at Ohio State, the first of her career, while Haggerty collected three assists.

Two Bears enjoyed internships last summer in politics. Kirsten Swanson interned on Capitol Hill while Schlegel interned for the state government in her native Colorado. Swanson interned for California Congressman Ken Calvert. She gave Capitol tours to constituents from the Congressman's district and wrote letters to constituents addressing various issues. Schlegel interned with Colorado governor John Hickenlooper and his plan to dedicate $100 million dollars to make Colorado the most bicycle accessible state in an effort to lead to a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment

Sophomore Madeline Jahelka, a native of Colorado Spring, Colo., grew up raising and breeding sheep. She also enjoys cake decorating as a hobby. She is an intended astrophysics major who hopes to become a surgeon.

Freshman Maryn Macha spent last summer teaching paraplegics how to surf.

Charlotte Biffar donated her time with Lacrosse The Nations, an organization that unifies the lacrosse community to sustainably improve education and health while creating hope and opportunity for children in need, Biffar volunteered in Nicaragua and Costa Rica. She helped teach underprivileged children life skills like teamwork and respect for others in both a classroom setting and on the lacrosse field.

For the third straight year, Cal was named to the IWLCA Academic Honor Squad in 2016, while Charlotte Biffar was an individual IWLCA Academic honoree. In addition, a program-best 15 Bears were named to the MPSF All-Academic team last year.

Jenny Wilkens went to Ecuador for a community service trip through her high school. They visited rural villages, helped teach English, plowed fields, plant ed crops and raised money.
