Busy Week Starts With Trip To Stanford

BERKELEY - The Cal baseball team returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Stanford for another mid-week non-conference contest against the Cardinal. First pitch is set for 5:35 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live by Pac-12 Networks with Roxy Bernstein and J.T. Snow on the call, David Feldman producing and Mark Wolfson directing.

Cal will look to carry the momentum of a stirring Saturday comeback at Utah into this week's action. The Bears rallied from five runs down to earn an 8-7 victory behind strong relief pitching from Erik Martinez and Tanner Dodson. The win kept Cal above .500 in the Pac-12 with an 8-7 record at the midway point of the conference season.

PROBABLE STARTERS
Cal: RHP Joey Matulovich (4-1, 5.01 ERA)
Stanford: LHP Erik Miller (2-1, 3.82 ERA)

LAST TIME OUT
A mid-week trip to nearby Saint Mary's saw Cal produce plenty of offense but free passes proved the Bears' undoing as 11 walks and three batsmen led to a 24-7 defeat in Moraga. Jeffrey Mitchell Jr. and Denis Karas each homered in the effort for Cal.

Cal continued to search for its footing on the road once it got to Utah as the Utes claimed the first two games of the series with a 9-3 win on Thursday and 16-8 victory on Friday. Those two games gave way to a memorable Saturday comeback though as, trailing 6-1 after three innings, the Bears rallied to earn an 8-7 victory at Smith's Ballpark. One run apiece in each of the final four innings helped complete the comeback and the eventual winning run scored on a sacrifice fly by Max Flower in the top of the ninth inning. Junior Erik Martinez earned the win with 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and sophomore Tanner Dodson picked up his first save of the year by getting the final out of the game.

SCOUTING REPORT: STANFORD
  • Stanford plays its fourth home game in a row Tuesday after taking one of three against UCLA last week. A trio of close games saw the Cardinal win 5-3 on Friday but fall 2-0 on Thursday and 7-6 on Saturday.
  • A strong start to the season established outfielder Quinn Brodey as Stanford's top run producer and he continues to lead the team in doubles (10), home runs (4) and RBI (28). He is also one of three players (Jack Klein, Matt Winaker) on the team with a batting average north of .300.
  • Stanford has been solid on the mound all season and owns a 3.35 team ERA. Closer Colton Hock owns a 5-1 record with a 2.51 ERA and seven saves while projected Tuesday starter Erik Miller is 2-1 with a 3.82 ERA.
  • Stanford owns the all-time series lead, 266-229-1.
  • Last meeting: Cal and Stanford met on April 4 with the Cardinal using an eight-run fourth inning to earn an 8-4 victory. Freshman Andrew Vaughn led the charge for the Bears with a pair of doubles and three RBI. Cal and Stanford will meet in Pac-12 play from May 13-15 at Evans Diamond.
MR. DO-EVERYTHING
Asked to fill a variety of roles this season, sophomore Tanner Dodson has played a key role in several different spots for the Bears this year. Cal's opening day starter is now thriving out of the bullpen and has allowed just one earned run in four relief appearances. He picked up the save in Cal's Sunday win at Utah by retiring the only hitter he faced. At the plate, the Elk Grove, Calif. native is a middle of the order mainstay and is hitting .301 with 12 doubles, two home runs, one triple, 20 RBI and 18 runs scored. Dodson has also seen time in the outfield and started in center field for all three games in Utah.

RUFFING IT
Another Golden Bear who has been asked to wear several different hats is catcher Matt Ruff. Serving more as a utility man this season, the junior from Yorba Linda, Calif. is hitting .350 on the season after a trip to Utah in which he went  6 for 11. Ruff enters the Stanford game 8 for his last 19 (.421) and in Pac-12 play leads the Bears with a .522 (12 for 23) average.

ON DECK
Pac-12 play resumes on Friday as the Bears welcome USC to Evans Diamond for the first of three games. First pitch on Friday is set for 7:05 p.m. with Saturday action beginning at 6:05 p.m. and Sunday's series finale set for a 1:05 p.m. first pitch. After the USC series, Cal will play seven of its next eight on the road with a Tuesday game at San Francisco and weekend trips to Washington and Oregon State separated only by a May 2 home game against the Dons. Stanford and TCU visit in mid-May for the final two home series of the season.
