Big Win For Bears Clinches Berth In MPSF Tournament

FRESNO - Behind five goals from Jena Fritts, the California women's lacrosse team defeated Fresno State, 16-14, Friday night from Fresno, and with San Diego State's victory over UC Davis tonight, the Golden Bears (5-11, 3-4) have clinched their first berth in the MPSF Tournament since 2013, and the first time in the Brooke Eubanks' era.

Fritts tied her career high with seven points as she also secured two assists in the game. Susie Ropp tallied five points, one shy of her career high. She scored four goals and added an assist.

Meredith Haggerty and Elizabeth Koehler came up huge in draws, as Koehler scooped up a personal best of seven, while Haggerty came up one shy of her career high with six. Koehler also caused two turnovers.

Caroline Schlegel and Caroline Corzel each scored two goals. Schlegel also paced the Bears in ground balls with five. Corzel also caused two turnovers.

While Cal both out shot (35-26) and secure more ground balls than the Bulldogs (21-18), the real difference was in the draw control category. The Bears garnered 26 draws to six for Fresno State.

Fritts and Ropp opened the scoring with the first two goals of the game before the Bulldogs tied the contest at two. The Bears scored four of the next five goals to take a 6-3 lead at the 11:24 mark in the first half. The Bulldogs battled back and cut the Cal lead to two at halftime.

The Bears regained control of the game at the outset of the second, notching four of the first five goals following the break.

With Cal winning, 13-8, the advantage swung back to Fresno State, as the Bulldogs scored the next six consecutive goals to take a 14-13 lead with 13 minutes remaining in regulation.

Cal fought back as Ropp, Fritts and Elizabeth Pellechi tallied three straight goals, and the defense clamped down to secure the victory, including a big save by Makayla Ward in the final minute. Ward had come in for starting goalie Jenny Wilkens, for the final 12-plus minutes.

Before the Bears can focus on the MPSF Tournament next week, they still have one more regular season contest left on the schedule. Cal faced No. 9 Colorado for Senior Day on Sunday, at 1 p.m. from California Memorial Stadium. The contest can be seen on the Pac-12 Networks.
