LOS ANGELES - California scored the first two goals of the game, but Stanford took control shortly thereafter and never gave up the lead, as the Cardinal defeated the Golden Bears, 19-5, in the quarterfinals of the MPSF Tournament. Cal's season comes to an end with a final overall record of 5-13.
Cal's scoring came from its seniors as
Jena Fritts picked up three points (two goals, one assist), while
Caroline Schlegel scored twice and
Elizabeth Pellechi tallied one final goal as a Bear.
Kirsten Swanson garnered two assists, while
Meredith Haggerty posted one, as well.
Haggerty was strong defensively, once again, registering five ground balls and causing three turnovers.
Sara Nolte, another Bear playing in her final game, scooped up three ground balls, collected two draws and caused two turnovers.
Jenny Wilkens recorded 11 saves, giving her 14 double-digit save performances in her career and eight in 2017. Nine of her 11 stops came in the first half. Wilkens also collected five ground balls.
