Cal Tied For Fourth At End Of Pac-12’s First Day

Collin Morikawa Leads Three Golden Bears In The Top 20 In A Tie For Sixth

BOULDER, Colo. – Cal (367-364 – 731, +31) was in a tie for fourth place when play was suspended due to darkness late in the second round of the Pac-12 Championships on Friday at the par-70, 7129-yard Boulder Country Club. The Golden Bears were one of the six teams in the 12-team field to complete their second round with the other six having between one and four holes per player to complete.

Defending national champion Oregon (+16) and Washington (+19) were the top two teams on the leaderboard when play was stopped while third-place Stanford (363-363 – 726, +26) has the top score among the six teams that completed two rounds.

Wyndham Clark of Oregon and Carl Yuan of Washington are tied for the individual lead at two-under par through their first 16 holes of the second round, while USC's Rico Hoey (72-68 – 140, E) is the top player to be finished with 36 holes.

Collin Morikawa (74-68 – 142, +2) is in sixth place four shots off the lead to pace a trio of Golden Bears in the top 20 with Finigan Tilly (73-73 – 146, +6) and Walker Huddy (72-74 – 146, +6) tied for 16th.

"Today was a solid day especially with how tough the conditions were," Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Walter Chun said. "Having three guys in the top 20 is huge but we have two more rounds. The guys are fighting for their season, and I'm proud to watch them do it for each other."

Morikawa rebounded from a four-over par 74 in the opening round by equaling the best round of the day with a two-under par 68 in his second trip around the course. Morikawa started his second round with a birdie on the par-four 10th and got to three-under for his round after adding two more on the par-three 15th and par-five second. He gave one stroke back with a bogey on the par-three sixth. He had a single birdie on the par-four first and five bogeys in his first round.

"Today was a test of physical and mental strength, and everyone on the team really showed it," Morikawa said. "The conditions with the weather being in the 30's and snowing at times today were things we've never been through, and it was good to see everyone some good parts throughout the day. We are only halfway through and anything can happen, so everyone needs to keep sticking to the game plan and give it all we have."

"Having three guys in the top 20 shows that everyone has been improving and working on their game," Morikawa added. "This is definitely the time for everyone to start playing solid golf. We're ready for the next couple of days."

Huddy's six birdies including four in his opening-round two-over par 72 that was Cal's second-best round of the day behind Morikawa's second-round 68 were the most among Cal players.

Sean Yu (T30th, 73-75 – 148, +8), Tanner Hughes (T42nd, 75-75 – 150, +10) and William Aldred (T55th, 78-74 – 152, +12) are also in the Cal lineup.

The 72-hole Pac-12 Championships being co-hosted by Colorado and the Pac-12 is scheduled to resume Saturday with the completion of second-round action (10 am MT/9 am PT) and the regularly-scheduled third round (Noon MT/11 am PT) but the weather forecast calls for snow showers throughout the day with a high temperature of 36 degrees.
