SCOUTING REPORT: STANFORD
  • The Cardinal enter mid-week action looking to bounce back after a tough weekend sweep at the hands of No. 1-ranked Oregon State. Stanford did earn a win during the week though, beating Long Beach State 7-3 in mid-week action.
  • Head coach Mark Marquess is in his 41st and final season at the helm of the Cardinal and enters Tuesday's contest with 1,599 career victories.
  • Stanford owns a .263 team batting average coming into Tuesday's game and outfielder Quinn Brodey has been a major contributor with a .313 average, four home runs, five doubles, one triple and 23 RBI.
  • The Cardinal have been solid on the mound this year as well, compiling a 3.28 team ERA. Probable starter Erik Miller is 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA in six appearances (five starts).
  • Stanford owns a 265-229-1 edge in the all-time series.
  • Last meeting: The Bears and Cardinal split their mid-week matchups in 2016 with Stanford winning 8-6 and Cal winning 5-2 in Berkeley. The Cardinal claimed the weekend series despite a 4-1 Thursday win by Cal.
LAST TIME OUT
Cal got its week started with a non-conference matchup against Long Beach State and, despite out-hitting the Dirtbags 9-6, couldn't get the timely hits it needed and fell 3-1. The Bears also got quality efforts from six different pitchers, led by starter Matt Ladrech who tossed two innings and allowed one unearned run.

Cal's bats came alive once Pac-12 play resumed as the Bears pounded out 34 hits during their three-game sweep of Washington State at Evans Diamond. Tanner Dodson led the charge, going 6 for 11 with three doubles and six RBI over the weekend while Tyrus Greene also went 6 for 11 with two runs scored. Cal hit .330 as a team against the Cougars. On the mound, the Bears allowed just eight earned runs in in 27 innings with starters Jared Horn, Joey Matulovich and Matt Ladrech all contributing quality outings.

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT
Cal's youth continues to play a major role in how the 2017 season develops. Sophomore Tyrus Greene leads the team in batting average (.364) in his first year as a regular while freshman Andrew Vaughn is next (.361) and leads the Pac-12 in home runs with seven entering the week. Cal's top seven hitters in batting average are either a freshman or sophomore and junior third baseman Denis Karas is the only regular starter older than a sophomore.

DIGGING THE LONG BALL
With the first few weeks of Pac-12 play in the books, Cal ranks atop the conference when it comes to home runs. The Bears have hit 18 big flies as a team, led by a conference-high seven from freshman Andrew Vaughn. Junior Denis Karas hit one against Oregon and ranks second on the team with three while Jeffrey Mitchell, Jr., Tanner Dodson and Cameron Eden each have two.

BASEPATH THIEVERY
Cal ranks second in the Pac-12 when it comes to stealing bases as the Bears enter the Stanford game with 27 steals. Sophomore Jonah Davis ranks fourth individually with seven and Jeffrey Mitchell, Jr. is tied for fifth with six. Nine different Bears have stolen a base so far this season.

ON DECK
After making the trek south to Stanford, Cal returns to Evans Diamond and returns to Pac-12 play with a three-game series against Arizona State. All three games against the Sun Devils will be broadcast live by Pac-12 Networks with Friday's game set for a 4:05 p.m. start. Saturday's contest will begin at 12:05 p.m. and Sunday's series finale is scheduled for a 2:05 p.m. first pitch. The Bears wrap up their nine-game Bay Area stay on April 11 with a mid-week trip to face defending West Coast Conference champ Saint Mary's.
