SANTA CRUZ – Cal sophomore William Aldred hole-in-one highlighted the Golden Bears' performance at the first day of the 71st annual Western Intercollegiate hosted by San Jose State at the par-70, 6615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Club. Aldred used a nine-iron to ace the 141-yard par-three hole on his second trip around the course while his tee shot landing just beyond the flag and rolling back to trickle in.

"We didn't see it go in but by the reaction from the green, we knew it was in," Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Walter Chun said.
The first 36 holes of the 54-hole event were scheduled to be played Saturday but the entire field was still on the course when play was suspended due to darkness at 7:45 pm PT. The event was also stopped due to rain for 44 minutes in the first round Saturday morning.
Cal (+27) was tied for 10th in the team standings when play was halted for the day, moving up three spots from the 13th-place position the Bears held after the opening round. Cal's four-over par second-round score when play was stopped was the fifth-best in the field.
Finigan Tilly (+3 thru 30 holes) is the first Cal player listed on the leaderboard in a tie for 28th place on the strength of his one-under play over the first 12 holes of his second round after an opening-round four-over 74.
"Finigan has been very impressive," Chun said. "He is a competitor and keeps digging and fighting. It's great to see his heart."

Collin Morikawa (+4 thru 31 holes) is a stroke behind Tilly in a tie for 34th and will need to move up 14 spots on Sunday to extend his string of top-20 finishes to 10 in a row including all nine events this season. Morikawa was in the top 20 for most of the day until playing his final three holes Saturday in three-over par including a double-bogey five on the 18th hole.

Tanner Hughes (+5, thru 31 holes) is another stroke back in a tie for 38th. Hughes had a five-over par opening round but is even through the first 12 holes of his second trip around the course.

Ben Doyle (T56, +8 thru 31 holes), Devin Hua (T76, +11 through 30 holes) and Aldred (T82, +12 thru 31 holes) are also in the Cal lineup while Walker Huddy (T68, +10 thru 29 holes) is playing as an individual.

The nation's top-ranked team USC (-8) leads the event by eight shots over second-place Stanford (E), while the Trojans' Justin Suh (-5 thru 32 holes) is one stroke ahead of the Cardinal's Isaiah Salinda (-4 thru 32 holes).

Play is scheduled to resume Sunday at 8 am with the conclusion of the second round prior to the day's regularly-scheduled third and final-round action.
