SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Cal redshirt freshman William Aldred recorded a hole-in-one for the second time in as many days Sunday during third and final round of the 71st annual Western Intercollegiate hosted by San Jose State at the par-70, 6615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Glub.

"When we saw it go in we just went crazy," Aldred said about the celebration he and playing partner Collin Morikawa unleashed after his second hole-in-one of the tournament Sunday. "It was very strange to have one go in again. It was pretty special."

Aldred's one previous hole-in-one came as a five-year-old in a par-three tournament.

A single hole-in-one is so rare that former Cal head coach Steve Desimone could remember "only two, maybe three" during his 37-season coaching career while current Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Walter Chun couldn't recall any during his 20 seasons associated with the Cal program.

"Bizarre," Aldred said when asked to describe his accomplishment in one word.

"I think seeing one hole-in-one in a lifetime is pretty incredible but two in one tournament speaks volumes," Chun said." I'm really happy for William. He's such a hard-working young man. He really dedicates himself to the game and to be rewarded with two holes-in-one is a tip of the hat to him. It couldn't happen to a better young man."

Aldred's two holes-in-one were among a tournament-record five in the event and believed to be the most ever in a men's collegiate tournament. Pepperdine's Robert Geibel (No. 3) and Hunter Epson (No. 15) had aces during Saturday's opening round while Washington's Daniel List also holed No. 8 along with Aldred on Sunday.

Aldred used a seven-iron to pick up his hole-in-one Sunday on the 177-yard par-three eighth hole after hitting a nine-iron top to pick up his ace Saturday on the 141-yard par-three 15th hole during his second trip of the day around the course. Both holes-in-one trickled into the hole after hitting about pin-high or slightly above the hole.

Finigan Tilly (74-71-72 – 217, +7) was the first Cal player listed on the leaderboard with a tied for 30th-place showing that was the best of his young collegiate career that began in January. Tilly had two of his three third-round birdies over the final five holes on the par-four second and par-three fifth holes.

"I was struggling a little bit in the beginning but my game is coming back," Tilly said. "It's tough to go from junior golf to big courses and big tournaments with really good players and fields like this. But I can take confidence from this and try to take it the Pac-12's in a couple of weeks."

Morikawa (73-75-72 – 220, +10) had the second-highest finish among Cal players despite a tied for 44th-place showing that was the lowest over the first 23 starts of his collegiate career. It also marked the first time Morikawa finished out of the top 20 in nine 2016-17 events. Morikawa's wild up-and-down round Sunday included six birdies, six bogeys and one double bogey.

Tanner Hughes (T53rd, 75-73-74 – 222, +12), Devin Hua (78th, 80-72-76 – 228, +18), Aldred (T79th, 76-78-75 – 229, +19) and Ben Doyle (92nd, 75-77-84 – 236, +26) followed Tilly and Morikawa on the leaderboard, while Walker Huddy (77-76-74 – 227, +17) played as an individual.

USC (347-348-355 – 1050, -E) won the team title, while the Trojans also had the individual medalist in Justin Suh (68-68-70 – 205, -5).

Cal (373-368-369 – 1110, +60) finished 13th in the final team standings in its last event of the 2016-17 regular-season and will next be in action April 28-30 at the Pac-12 Championships at the Boulder Country Club.
