Ashtyn Davis won the Pac-12 110-meter hurdles title in a personal-best 13.50 seconds.
EUGENE, Ore. – Heading into the Pac-12 Championships,
Ashtyn Davis was a perfect 6-for-6 in 110-meter hurdles finals this season. Make that 7-for-7 after Sunday's action as the Cal junior cruised across the line in a lifetime-best 13.50 seconds to capture the conference title in the event.
Davis, who also suits up as a defensive back for the Golden Bear football team, ran the fastest time in Saturday's qualifying heats. In the final, he took a quick lead despite clipping the first two hurdles, then essentially ran clean to the finish. Davis' time moved him up to third in school history in the 110 hurdles, and he became the first Cal hurdles champion since Ray Stewart earned the crown in 2013.
Davis was joined by
Peter Simon, who won the men's short put Saturday, as Cal's two conference champions over the weekend. In the team competition, the Bear men finished fifth with 72 points, while the Cal women tied for ninth with 45 points.
"We had some outstanding performances, led by
Ashtyn Davis' spectacular win in the 110 hurdles," Director of Track & Field
Tony Sandoval said. "We were close in a number of events, but that's why the conference meet is so competitive. The men's fifth-place finish is one of our highest in recent years, and while the women tied for ninth, they were just three points away from moving up two more spots. I am very pleased with our effort and improvements, especially our younger student-athletes who are getting valuable experience."
The Cal women were paced by four third-place finishes Sunday, all in field events. The first on the board was senior
Ilse Kaaja, who came up big in her final Pac-12 meet by uncorking a PR effort of 200-7 to take third in the hammer. In the women's triple jump,
Ashley Anderson went a personal-best 42-11 on her first attempt and held on for third place, up six spots from her result last year.
Lauren Martinez was third in the pole vault, clearing 13-6.25, while
Kendall Mader earned her place on the podium by taking third in the discus with an effort of 167-2.
Rebecca Croft (5th, 2:06.34) and
Jordyn Colter (6th, 2:06.44) both scored in the 800 meters. The Bears' 4x100-meter relay started the afternoon with a fourth-place result, and the 4x400-meter relay was sixth in a season-best 3:41.45.
For the men, Cal picked up points in seven events in addition to Davis in the hurdles. The top finisher was
Thomas Joyce, who closed strong to take third in the 1500 meters in 3:55.58.
Josh Lewis was seventh in the 800 meters (1:50.54), while
Connor Meech (4th, 51.76) and
Paramveer Chohan (8th, 54.53) scored in the 400-meter hurdles.
Others to earn points included
Malik McMorris (5th, 177-0) and
McKay Johnson (7th, 174-2) in the discus and
Karsten Wethington (6th, 49-1.50w) in the triple jump. The 4x100-meter relay was seven and the 4x400-meter relay took eighth in a season-best 3:11.25.
The Bears will next be back in action for the NCAA West Regionals May 25-27 in Austin, Texas.
