Cal Sophomore Picks Up Honor For Second Straight Season

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – Sophomore Colin Morikawa has been selected Division I PING All-Region for the second straight season with honorees for six regions announced Saturday by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Morikawa was selected for the West region.

"Being named All-Region for the second straight year is a great accomplishment," Morikawa said. "This season was one that I'll always remember and to be recognized as a top player in the West region is honor."

"We are all happy to see Collin continue to be recognized for his play this season," Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Walter Chun said. "Hopefully, this is only the beginning of the accolades that will head Collin's way."

The first-team All-Region selection added to a long list of Morikawa's honors that in 2016-17 have also included semifinalist selections for the Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year Award and Ben Hogan Award, a spot on the watch list for the Haskins Award, first-team All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 Men's Golfer of the Month (March 2017), as well as both Cal's Most Valuable and Most Improved Player. He has also been selected as one of 10 players to represent the United States at the 2017 Arnold Palmer Cup (June 9-11) and is under consideration for several other honors to be named in the near future.

The All-American candidate compiled one of the top individual seasons in school history in 2016-17 that included his first collegiate victory at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in March following his first-ever playoff in a collegiate tournament at the prestigious Southern Highlands Collegiate. Morikawa finished in the top-10 in eight of his 11 stroke-play events in 2016-17. He set a single-season Cal record with a 69.94 stroke average that ranks sixth in the country, while he is ranked as high as the nation's No. 7 collegiate golfer in the latest Golfstat rankings. He is also No. 2 in the current Scratch Players World Amateur Ranking.

The first event on Morikawa's busy summer schedule is U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying at Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach on June 5. Other highlights include representing the United States at the Arnold Palmer Cup at the Atlanta Athletic Club and a spot in the U.S. Amateur at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades (August 14-20).
