Collin Morikawa To Play At NCAA Stanford Regionals

Cal Sophomore Selected As Individual But NCAA Regionals Streak Of Team Appearances Ends At Nine

INDIANAPOLIS – Cal sophomore Colin Morikawa was selected Thursday to play in the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships as the top-seeded individual at the 54-hole NCAA Stanford Regionals to be held May 15-17 at the Stanford Golf Course. Morikawa was one of 45 individuals not on the 81 teams selected for NCAA Regionals action with 10 of those at the NCAA Stanford Regionals. Cal was not selected as a team, ending a school-record string of nine consecutive NCAA Regional appearances. The announcement was made live Thursday morning on the Golf Channel's Pre Game.

"Being selected to the NCAA Stanford Regionals is great news especially since it's so close to Cal," Morikawa said. "Unfortunately, I won't be able to go out there with the team, but I will go out there and represent the Bears as best as I can. Extending our season as long as I can is the goal so having the opportunity to do so is an honor."

"It's good to see Collin moving forward into the postseason," Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Walter Chun said. "He certainly earned that privilege with his exceptional play this year. Coach Mina and I are proud that he will represent Cal, and we will try our best to help him advance out of the NCAA Regional and to the NCAA Championship."

Morikawa is in the midst of putting together one of the top single seasons in Cal history in 2016-17. The All-American candidate is a semifinalist for the Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year Award and on the watch list for the Haskins Award also given to the nation's top collegiate golfer. He was also a semifinalist for The Ben Hogan Award honoring the year's top amateur player. Morikawa earned Pac-12 Men's Golfer of the Month honors in March of 2017 after an incredible month in which he picked up his first collegiate victory at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. The win followed his first-ever playoff in a collegiate tournament at the prestigious Southern Highlands Collegiate before he finished second. Between the two tournaments, he was selected as one of 10 players to represent the United States at the 2017 Arnold Palmer Cup in June.

Morikawa has been in the top-10 in eight of his 10 stroke-play events in 2016-17 including a tied for sixth place finish in his most recent tournament at the Pac-12 Championships. He has a 69.93 stroke average that ranks fifth in the country. He is also ranked as high as the nation's No. 5 collegiate golfer in the latest Golfstat rankings while he is No. 2 in the current Scratch Players World Amateur Ranking.

The low individual from each of the six NCAA Regionals across the country will advance to the final national championships field May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
