BERKELEY – Just a few days removed from the conclusion of an incredible freshman season, Cal first baseman Andrew Vaughn found out that he'll need to shift his summer plans a bit as the 2017 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year has been invited to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team training camp in North Carolina.

Vaughn, who tied for the Pac-12 lead in home runs and ranked in the top 10 in RBI, slugging percentage, hits, total bases and batting average, will train with USA Baseball as it prepares for a summer of games that includes series against Chinese Taipei and Cuba. The final roster will be announced before the Chinese Taipei series.

A breakout freshman season from the Santa Rosa, Calif. native helped the Bears finish tied for fifth in the Pac-12 with a 15-15 conference record. He started every game at first base en route to a .349 average, 12 home runs, 50 RBI, .555 slugging percentage and .996 fielding percentage in his first year in Berkeley. And, Vaughn even helped the Bears on the mound, making 10 appearances in relief.

He also became the first Cal player since 2015 to earn National Player of the Week honors after an incredible four-game stretch against Stanford and USC in mid-April. In four games that week, Vaughn went 7 for 15 with three home runs and 12 RBI while hitting not one but two walk-off home runs against the Trojans.

The 2017 Collegiate National Team will train at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina, and compete in a series of games with teams from the Coastal Plains League from June 20-25. The U.S. will then host international friendship series against Chinese Taipei and Cuba from June 27 – July 7, in Cary, Charlotte and Durham, North Carolina.  Both series will be streamed live on USABaseball.com.  Follow @USABaseball and @USABaseballCNT on Twitter for all of the latest news on USA Baseball and the Collegiate National Team.
