BERKELEY - Cal first baseman Andrew Vaughn added another award Monday to an already lengthy list of honors as Baseball America named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year to it's Freshman All-America first team.

Monday's award is another in what has been an accolade-filled offseason for the Santa Rosa, Calif. native. Named the Pac-12's top freshman in a vote of conference coaches, Vaughn emerged on the national scene by tying for the Pac-12 lead in home runs with 12 and hitting .349 with 50 RBI. He also showed his versatility throughout the season as both a pitcher and a fielder, making 10 appearances in relief and compiling a .996 fielding percentage in his first season as a first baseman.

One week in particular earned Vaughn national recognition right away. In four games against USC and Stanford, Cal's first baseman went 7 for 15 with three home runs and 12 RBI as he hit a pair of walk-off home runs against the Trojans to help the Bears sweep their Southern California rivals. The offensive explosion garnered National Player of the Week honors from multiple publications (including Perfect Game) as well as Pac-12 Player of the Week.

Vaughn was one of just two Pac-12 players named to the Baseball America Freshman All-America first team as he was joined by Oregon reliever Kenyon Yovan. Oregon State pitcher Jake Mulholland was named to the second team.

With the 2017 season in the rearview mirror, Vaughn hasn't slowed down. Currently training with the U.S. Collegiate National Team, he got off to a torrid start in Team USA's first few contests of the summer, going 4 for 6 with a double, triple, two walks, three runs and four RBI in his first two games. For info on the team's progress, an updated roster and a schedule of events, visit USABaseball.com.
