Aaron Rodgers Picks Up Pair of ESPYs
Former Cal Quarterback Wins Best NFL Player And Best Play Awards
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Former Cal quarterback Aaron Rodgers took home ESPYs for Best NFL Player and Best Play on Wednesday at the annual ESPY Awards show held at the Microsoft Theater and televised live by ESPN.
Rodgers earned his sixth Pro Bowl selection in 2016 when he led the NFL with 40 touchdown throws. He completed 401-of-610 passes (65.7%) for 4,428 yards with only seven interceptions for a 104.2 passer rating. His completions and passing attempts as well as his rushes (67) and rushing yards (369) were career highs, while his completions were also a Green Bay Packers' franchise record.
Rodgers' 35-yard sideline completion to Jared Cook on third-and-20 that set up Green Bay's winning field goal in the fourth quarter of a 34-31 NFC Divisional playoff victory at Dallas last season earned him his second Best Play ESPY in as many years. Two years ago, Rodgers found fellow former Cal player and namesake Richard Rodgers for a 61-yard Hail Mary touchdown on the game's final play in a regular-season victory at Detroit.
Rodgers played for two seasons at Cal in 2003 and 2004 before being selected by the Packers in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft. Rodgers was a first-team All-Pac-10 selection in his 2004 junior season when he led the Golden Bears to a 10-2 overall record, a second-place conference finish and a spot in the Holiday Bowl.
