BUDAPEST – On the seventh day of the FINA World Championships, Cal graduate Farida Osman posted a historic finish on her way to a bronze medal in the 50-meter butterfly, while Golden Bear junior Kathleen Baker earned her second medal of the meet with a bronze in the 200-meter backstroke.

Representing her home country, Osman became the first Egyptian ever to claim a medal at the World Championships in swimming. She finished the race in 25.39 to break the African record in the event for the third time in the last two days after doing so in both the prelims and semifinals. Osman edged out Kelsi Worrell, who was fourth in an American-record 25.48. Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom won gold in 24.60.

A short time later, Osman just missed qualifying for the 50-meter freestyle final, finishing ninth in the semifinals but setting another African record in 24.62. Cal freshman Abbey Weitzeil, swimming for the United States, was 15th in 24.80.

A two-time Olympian for Egypt, Osman won the NCAA championship in the 100-yard fly earlier this year during her senior season for the Bears. She is also the Cal record-holder in the 50-yard free with a best of 21.32.

Baker covered her 200-meter back in 2:06.48, just a tenth of a second off of her personal best. Australia's Emily Seebohm took gold in 2:05.68, followed by Katinka Hosszu of Hungary in 2:05.85. For Baker, who earned a silver medal in the 100 back earlier in the week, was competing in the 200 back for the first time at a major international meet.

During the collegiate season, Baker was named the CSCAA National Swimmer of the Year after winning the 100- and 200-yard back, as well as the 200-yard individual medley at the NCAA Championships.
