BERKELEY – California redshirt senior Jose Carrera-Garcia pegged his first preseason All-Pac-12 honor, announced the Conference Tuesday. The team was selected by the league's six coaches and the 11-player list consists of 10 field players and a goalkeeper.
 
Carrera-Garcia finished his junior season with the Golden Bears among the Conference's best after being named to the All-Pac-12 first team in 2016, along with recent graduates Nick Lima and Christian Thierjung. The Ontario, Calif., native, also earned a second team all-conference honor to conclude his sophomore campaign in 2015.
 
"Jose has been a consistent presence on the field for us through his time here," said head coach Kevin Grimes. "We're really excited for him and looking forward to starting the season soon and then looking forward to a competitive Pac-12 schedule."
 
Additionally, the Golden Bears were picked to finish sixth in the league receiving seven votes by league coaches. The Bears finished sixth in the Pac-12 a season ago after a gritty conference season, where the team finished on the wrong side of several closely-contested games. Cal, however, bested then 24th-ranked UCLA in Los Angeles 2-1 with Carrera-Garcia scoring a crucial and momentum-changing equalizer in the second half to highlight a resilient Bear effort.

Cal kicks off the season on Aug. 25 when it hosts West Virginia at Edwards Stadium at 4:30 p.m. (PT). The Conference opener for the Bears is set for Sept. 28 at UCLA with an 8 p.m. start time and will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
