Lynch Closes World University Games With Gold
TAIPEI, Taiwan - After claiming a gold medal on night one of the World University Games, Cal swimmer
Justin Lynch closed out his stay in Taipei with the same result as he helped Team USA finish a week of racing with gold in the 400-meter medley relay.
Lynch, who swam the anchor leg of the 400 freestyle relay to kick off the Games, returned to relay action as the third man in the pool for Team USA. Justin Ress got the Americans started and took the lead right away, Andrew Wilson maintained that advantage and Lynch did the same, swimming to a butterfly split of 52.70 seconds. Ryan Held closed out the win with the freestyle leg and the team came home with a final time of 3:33.27. Russia stopped the clock in 3:34.85 to take silver and Japan finished third to take bronze.
The Vallejo, Calif. native was one of several Golden Bears to compete in Taiwan. Incoming freshman Sean Grieshop made the final of the 400 individual medley, placing seventh for Team USA.
Pawel Sendyk (Poland),
Long Gutierrez (Mexico),
Andy Song (Mexico) and Jeremy Bagshaw (Canada) also competed throughout the week. Lynch, Grieshop, Sendyk and Song will be back in the pool for the Bears this fall as they get set for the upcoming collegiate season in Berkeley.
