BERKELEY – Johnny Hooper, Luca Cupido and Odysseas Masmanidis each scored hat tricks to lead No. 1 Cal to a 20-10 victory over No. 13 UC San Diego on Saturday at the Spieker Aquatics Complex.

Cal senior goalie Kevin Le Vine made eight saves, as the Golden Bears improved their record to 8-0. The Tritons fell to 3-6 after the nonconference meeting.

One day after the Bears struggled offensively in an 8-6 win over eighth-ranked Pepperdine, they lit up the scoreboard early and often against UCSD. Cal took an 8-2 lead when Hooper scored his third goal with 3:30 left in the second quarter, and the Bears took a 12-5 lead into halftime when Nicholas Carniglia converted a penalty shot with no time left in the second quarter.

All five of UCSD's first-half goals came courtesy of freshman Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt, who wound up scoring a game-high six times.

Cupido, the Cal co-captain, completed his hat trick when he scored 13 seconds into the second half to give the Bears a 13-5 lead. That also marked his team-high 18th-goal of the season. Masmanidis scored his 17th goal of the year and third of the game with his power-play strike at 6:39 in the third quarter, giving Cal a 14-5 lead.

Two Bears scored their first goals of the season in freshman Ryan Hurst, who gave Cal a 10-4 lead with 2:00 left in the first half and freshman Ethan Wojciechowski, who scored twice in the third quarter. Senior Connor Reid added a goal of his own, scoring with 11 seconds left in the third to give Cal a 19-7 lead.

Hurst set up Jordan Hoover for Cal's final goal, which came with 1:38 left in the game and made the score 20-8. Turnbow-Lindenstadt scored again off a power play with 1:04 to go, and then UCSD's Alessandro Valania scored with one second left to make the final score 20-10.

"We came out well on the defensive side and that created a lot of transition opportunities for us, so we came out with a good focus," Cal head coach Kirk Everist said. "Hooper started to come alive a little bit and really led us early with the steals that led to goals and passes that led to penalty shots, Luca was engaged and got us going, and Ody on his first possession scored a goal, so they showed up ready to play and got our offense back on track from yesterday.

"We've still got work to do in some areas; our five-man defense struggled a bit, so we've got to work on that. But I thought we got some good play out of a lot of guys. All in all it was a good weekend."

Cal next plays at the MPSF Invitational from Sept. 22-24 in Los Angeles. The Bears will open the tournament against Air Force on Sept. 22 at 12 p.m.
