SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Senior
Antzela Dempi had 11 kills and hit for a .500 percentage but the Cal volleyball team fell to No. 16 Utah 25-19, 25-21, 25-12 on Sunday afternoon at the Huntsman Center.
Junior
Carmen Annevelink added seven kills at a .462 percentage while junior setter
Mackenzie Albrecht had 19 assists and six digs.
Dempi increased her hitting percentage to a team-high .345. She also leads the Bears at 2.96 kills per set.
Cal (9-4, 0-2 Pac-12) fell behind 12-7 in the first set but scored four in a row with help from two kills by Dempi and another by senior
Christine Alftin. The Bears were still within 16-14 before the Utes registered four points in a row to take control.
After Utah established an 18-14 lead in the second set, Cal chipped away to trim the deficit to 20-19. But once again the Utes pulled away late to close out the set.
Sophomore
Emma Smith saw her first extended time of the season at libero and recorded six digs while freshman
Mima Mirkovic had five kills and five digs.
The Bears (9-4, 0-2 Pac-12) return home next week to host Arizona State on Friday at 7 p.m.
