Game Recap: Field Hockey | | Cal Athletics

Bears Blast By Bulldogs, 8-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Megan Rodgers notched her first collegiate hat trick and five more Golden Bears added goals to their stat lines as California field hockey blasted by Bryant in an 8-0 shutout. Cal improves to 2-3 this season with the Bears' first road victory from Goldberger Family Field in Providence, R.I.

The hot-shooting Bears saw shot attempts from 11 different players, with Rodgers, Gabi Jimenez, Maddie Cleat, Katrina Carter, Melina Moore and Alie Zimmer all finding the back of the cage. Cal's eight goals are the most the Bears have produced since a 10-0 win at Pacific on Sept. 3, 2011.

"Outcomes are secondary for us right now, but getting the offense on track is great to see," said head coach Shellie Onstead. "I consider it a small step in the big picture."

Rodgers collected six points for the day on her three goals to push her season total to a team-best 16 points, and Jimenez added three points to her season totals with an assist alongside her second goal of the season. Lindsay Mathison, Femke Delissen and Janaye Sakkas also recorded assists.

Cal's first shutout of the season also came with steady work by the Golden Bear defense, who limited Bryant to just four shots, and goalkeeper Danielle Mentink logged two saves in a complete-game effort. It was Cal's first shutout win since Oct. 11, 2015, when the Bears defeated Pacific, 1-0.

For the game, Cal outshot Bryant 23-4 and dominated in corners, 10-3.

Of Cal's eight goals, six came unassisted. Carter got the Bears going early with a high shot into the goal in the sixth minute, and Rodgers added her first of three with a solo pick-up in the 20th minute  for the Bears to lead 2-0 after the first half.

Cal doubled up in the first three minutes of the second half, with Jimenez scoring her second goal in four games at 36:22 and Rodgers adding her second of the game at 37:42.

Rookie Cleat earned her first collegiate goal with a shot into the right side from left of the goal to push Cal's lead to 5-0 at 59:38.

In the final five minutes of the game, the Bears unleashed a flurry of shots, with Rodgers and Moore each tallying goals in the 66th and 68th minutes, respectively. Moore's goal was the 18th of her career, moving her closer to the field hockey program's career top-10 mark. The junior captain is eight goals away from tying Onstead and Melissa Nerone's marks of 26 career goals, which rank 10th all-time.

Zimmer's 70th-minute goal for Cal's final score of the game was her first since the 2015 season.
