SACRAMENTO – The Cal women's soccer team walked away victorious in its first overtime game of the season, beating Sacramento State, 2-1, in double overtime
on a warm and sunny afternoon at Hornet Field. Trailing 1-0 at halftime,
Miranda Nild sent the game into overtime with a strike in the 86
th minute and
Abi Kim tallied the game winner with six minutes left in the second overtime to give the Golden Bears (5-1-0) their third consecutive win.
Maggie Bell, assisted both scores for Cal, who improved to 2-1Â on the road this season. Â Sacramento State falls to 3-3-0 on the year, dropping their second consecutive game at home.
The host Hornets got on the board first, breaking though in the 35
th minute on a goal by Kylee Kim-Bustillos. Sacramento State drew a free kick from 30 yards out that found its way to defender Chelsea Arnold, who then played the ball into the box. Kim-Bustillos, the reigning Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week, got a head to it, beating Cal keeper
Emily Boyd to the far post for her fourth goal of the season.
Cal picked up the pressure in the final minutes of the first half, getting looks from
Luca Deza and
Kayla Fong. However, the Golden Bears were unable to convert and went into halftime trailing for just the second time this season.
Neil McGuire's squad came out of halftime energized, outshooting Sacramento State 6-1 in the second half. However, the Bears were not able to break through until the 86
th minute, when Nild tallied her third goal in the last three games. Bell, who grew up in the Sacramento area, had her own one-on-one attempt broken up but stuck with the play, picking up the ball and finding NÂild at the top of the box. The junior from Castro Valley, California calmly buried the ball in the back of the net to level the score at 1-1.
Nild, who tallied the game winner in Cal's 1-0 win over Long Beach State on Sunday, has scored in three consecutive games, the longest scoring streak by any Golden Bear this season.
"This was a good gut check for us," said Nild after the game. "Games like these really test us and will help us get physically and mentally ready for Pac-12 play."
Nild nearly scored her second goal of the game with less than three minutes left to play, but her strike from 20 yards out was tipped over the bar by Hornets' goalkeeper Aaliyah Fesili.
With neither team able to convert in the final minutes, Cal headed to overtime for the first time in 2017. Sacramento State had the first scoring opportunity in overtime, but Andrea Boehm's one-on-one attempt went wide of the goal.
Kelly Fitzgerald and
Guro Bergsvand both had looks for the Golden Bears, but were unable to keep them on target.Â
Kim, who earned Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors in Week 1, secured the victory for the Bears with less than seven minutes to play in sudden death overtime. Bell found a streaking Kim on the left wing and the Vashon, Washington ripped a shot that beat Fesili, hitting off the upper 90 and going in to end the game on a golden goal for the Golden Bears.
"[
Maggie Bell] played a great ball down the wing," explained Kim, who leads Cal with four goals this season. "I was going to cut in and keep dribbling but I saw the defender was trying to cut me off. I just took a touch and went for it."
Cal outshot Sacramento State, 18-9, on the afternoon, including a 4-1 edge in overtime. Boyd matched her season high with four saves, including a point-blank stop in the 13
th minute to keep the match scoreless. The Golden Bears forced Fesili into six saves and held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
Cal returns to Berkeley next weekend to close out the non-conference campaign, hosting Oklahoma on September 15 at 1:30 p.m. and No. 18 Oklahoma State at 11 a.m. on Sunday. This will be the first time the Golden Bears square off against the Sooners – who reached the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament in 2016 – and the Cowgirls – who are unbeaten on the season at 6-0-1.
