Cal Opens Indoor Season Strong
Bethan Knights Records The Nation’s Sixth-Fastest 5K And Earns The Win
SEATTLE, Wash. – The California men's and women's track teams began competition at the UW Invitational at Dempsey Indoor. The Bears posted six top-five finishes and six personal bests in limited action on Friday.
Bethan Knights won the 5000m race with a new personal best time of 15:45.95. Knights edged out Stanford's Vanessa Fraser at the line to claim the victory. That time is the second-fastest indoor 5000m in school history and the sixth-fastest time in the NCAA during the 2018 indoor season.
Marissa Dobry finished fifth in the second section and 20th overall with a 5K personal best of 16:57.12.
In her first collegiate meet,
Camryn Rogers set a lifetime personal best in the weight throw with a toss of 65-6.25 (19.97m). She was consistent throughout the meet as all six of her throws were at least 19.08m on her way to a second place finish. Rogers' mark ranks 20th in the NCAA so far this year.
Destiny Parker ensured Cal finished with two of the top performances in the event as she took third with a toss of 62-10.50 (19.16m).
Paramveer Chohan took third place in the men's 200m. Chohan finished behind two Olympians in the competition as Mike Berry and Mobolade Ajomale took the top two spots. Chohan finished as the second-place collegian in the event. Chohan was one of four Bears in the top 14 of the 200m.
Diab Davis crossed the line in 11th (22.33) while
Misana Viltz set a personal best with a 13th-best time of 22.46.
Branden Smith notched a 22.55 finish in his first collegiate race.
Jackie Patterson set a personal best in the 200m as she crossed the line in 24.96. The sophomore finished in fifth place. Freshman
Deshae Wise began her career with a 20th place finish in a 103-person field. Wise finished in 25.38 with Zion Corrales-Nelson taking 24th in a personal best indoor time of 25.56.
Cal had two DMR teams finish in the top seven of the 24 teams in the women's competition. Cal's squad of
Annie Boos,
Schantell Williams, Jacqueline Chandler and
Chloe Hansel won the second section and placed fifth overall with a time of 11:43.69. The foursome of
Rebecca Croft,
Jenna Mencarelli,
Ariane Arndt and
Marissa Williams took sixth in the third section and seventh overall with a mark of 11:46.27.
The Bears will return to action tomorrow morning starting at 9 a.m. with qualifying heats in the women's 60m hurdles.
