Cal-UCLA Postgame Notes

Laird Surpasses 1,500 Yards; Kunaszyk Registers 22 Tackles

  • LB Jordan Kunaszyk set a career high with 22 tackles in the game (14 solo). His previous high was 16 at Colorado last fall. Kunaszyk is the first Cal player to have at least 20 in a game since Jerrott Willard had 22 vs. USC on Oct. 30, 1993. He has reached double digits in four of Cal's six games this season (12 at BYU, 11 vs. Oregon, 11 at Arizona).
  • With 94 yards rushing against UCLA, RB Patrick Laird surpassed 1,500 for his career and now has 1,576 rushing yards.
  • Cal matched its season high in tackles for loss with 6.0. The Bears also had 6.0 vs. both BYU and Idaho State.
  • Laird completed his second pass of the season in the third quarter, an 11-yard play to Vic Wharton III. He also had a 14-yard completion vs. Oregon.
  • On Cal's 75-yard opening drive of the third quarter that led to a touchdown, the Bears were 6-of-6 passing for 50 yards (5-5 McIlwain, 1-1 Laird).
  • Evan Rambo had the first sack of his career on UCLA's first drive of the game (minus-12 yards).
  • Today's game was the Joe Roth Memorial Game, honoring Cal's All-American quarterback who passed away from cancer in February 1977.
  • Burl Toler Jr. received the Glenn Seaborg Award, given to a former Cal football player for his career achievements. Toler was a linebacker on Cal's 1975 Pac-8 co-championship team and has had a long career as an architect and project planner. His son, Burl III, is Cal's running backs coach.
  • Cal celebrated its annual National Championship Week this week, honoring the Bears' 2107-18 champions - swimmer Kathleen Baker (200-yard backstroke) and women's rowing (NCAA team title, varsity 8, varsity 4).
