Bears Battle To Draw

Cal Earns Away Point With 3-3 Double Overtime Draw Against Arizona

TUCSON, Arizona – Despite several key contributors missing from the lineup, the Cal women's soccer team earned another result on the road, playing Arizona to a 3-3 double-overtime draw Saturday night in Tucson. The Golden Bears (5-7-2, 1-4-1 Pac-12) picked up points on the road for the second consecutive weekend in Pac-12 play and matched their season-high with three goals scored in the match. Abi Kim, Miranda Nild, and Anja Koehler all found the back of the net for the Bears, who became just the third team this season to deny Arizona (8-4-2, 1-3-2 Pac-12) a victory on its home turf.

The result was made even more impressive as the Bears played without starting defenders Emily Smith and Morgan Rogers for the majority of the match, both leaving the game due to injury. Yet head coach Neil McGuire was impressed with his youthful team's ability to respond to adversity on the road.

"The resolve of the team was probably the most impressive thing about tonight's game," said McGuire. "Despite losing two defenders pretty early in the game and adjusting our shape on the fly, I thought our girls responded really, really well. Obviously, credit to Arizona for coming back and scoring two goals to tie it up, but this is a fantastic result for our girls."

Looking to build upon last weekend's road win at Oregon, the Bears opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Nild dropped a ball in behind Arizona's back line. Kim timed her run perfectly and beat her defender to the ball, heading it past Arizona goalkeeper Lainey Burdett for her fourth goal of the season and first of the year in Pac-12 play. The assist was Nild's third of the season and second in the last two outings.

However, Arizona quickly replied with a goal of its own, as Amanda Porter capitalized on a rebound in the box in the 23rd minute for her first goal of the season. After a scramble in the box following an Arizona corner kick, Cal goalkeeper Olivia Sekany was able to make the initial save on a close-range shot by the Wildcats, but Porter was waiting and capitalized on the loose ball.

Sekany, who earned the start for the second consecutive game, made a career-high seven saves for the Bears, including several difficult stops on slick and slippery pitch due to morning storms in the area. Her Arizona counterpart, Burdett, did not record a save on the night.

Despite being outshot, 12-4, in the first half, Cal was able to take the lead into the locker room as Koehler scored her second goal in as many games. In the 42n minute, the Bears were awarded a free kick from 30 yards out on the wing. Sophomore defender Kai Henderson drove a dangerous ball into the area and Koehler was able to get just enough of her head on the ball to flick it past an on-rushing Burdett. The goal was Koehler's second of the season and third in her Golden Bear career, while Henderson earned her first career point with the assist.

Carrying a 2-1 lead into halftime, Cal quickly added to its advantage in the opening minutes of the second half, when Kim used her speed to get into the Arizona box and draw a foul. Nild, a senior tri-captain for the Bears, stepped up to the spot and buried her attempt for her third goal of the year. With her goal and assist against the Wildcats, Nild now has nine points on the year, moving into a tie with Kim for second on the team.

However, Cal was unable to hold on to the two-goal advantage, as Arizona threw numbers into the attack pressing for a result. Jada Talley pulled one back for the hosts in the 52nd minute, running on to a ball played over the top and beating Sekany with a strike to the near post.

The shorthanded Bears' squad was able to withstand the Arizona attack for much of the night, as the Wildcats outshot the Bears, 31-7 on the evening, with a 12-4 advantage in corner kicks.

However, it was on a corner kick in the 76th minute where the Wildcats tied the match, with Morgan McGarry bending her service directly into the net.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net again in regulation and the Bears headed to overtime for the fourth time this season.

Cal's best opportunity in the overtime periods came in the 95th minute when a corner kick by the Bears glanced off the crossbar. However, Cal was unable to capitalize on the rebound and the ball was cleared away. Sekany was called upon to make one save in the second overtime period as the match ended in a draw.

With the tie, Cal is now unbeaten in its last two matches and has scored four goals in its last two outings, after finding the back of the net just twice in the previous four games combined. Saturday's performance under adverse conditions on the road stands as yet another example of the growth McGuire has seen from his young side.

"We've had such a young team and they've had to learn the ropes this season," said McGuire. "There's been a steep learning curve and I think now they're starting to get familiar with what it takes to succeed at this level, against top competition. With each game, we've started to get stronger, which is good for the program. We definitely want to carry that into our next match."

The Bears will now return to Berkeley for a pair of matches at Edwards Stadium. Cal hosts No. 16 Colorado (12-0-3, 4-0-2 Pac-12) at Noon PT on Thursday, October 18, before closing out the weekend with a 12:30 p.m. matchup against Utah (7-6-1, 4-2-0 Pac-12) on Sunday, October 21. The Golden Bears beat both Mountain School opponents on the road last season, opening the trip with a 1-0 win over the Buffs before a 2-0 victory against the Utes.
