Bears Make Good First Impression In Exhibition Win

Cal Rolls To 82-62 Victory Over Cal State East Bay

BERKELEY – Though the 2018-19 season will officially start in China in just over a week, the Cal men's basketball team treated fans to a dress rehearsal for what's to come as the Bears welcomed Cal State East Bay to Haas Pavilion and claimed a 82-62 victory over the Pioneers in exhibition action.

Tuesday's game offered a first look at a youthful Cal roster and that first impression proved a positive one for the Bears as a whole. Freshman Matt Bradley finished as the game's high scorer in his first collegiate action, scoring 18 points while going 6 of 10 from the floor. Junior transfer Paris Austin added 15 points and eight assists, sophomore Justice Sueing chipped in with 15 points, freshman Jacobi Gordon scored 11 and fellow freshman Andre Kelly also scored 11 to round out the Bears in double figures.

Bradley, Kelly, Austin, Sueing and sophomore Darius McNeill drew the start and Bradley did the honors of providing the first bucket of the season, draining an elbow jumper to convert his first shot as a Golden Bear and get Cal on the board right away

Cal's visitors from nearby Hayward hung tough throughout the first half with sophomore Nai Carlisle helping to keep the Pioneers within five by the under-8 time out. The Bears stretched that advantage to 33-22 by intermission thanks to 12 first-half points from Sueing and seven from Austin.

The first 10 minutes of the second half saw the Bears continue to extend their lead and a 3-pointer from the top of the key by McNeill put Cal up 58-41 with 9:45 left. An alley-oop dunk by freshman Connor Vanover drew a strong reaction from the crowd and provided a second-half highlight as the Bears continued to pull away with eight players putting their name in the scoring column.

"When we moved the ball around and made the defense work, we got really good looks," head coach Wyking Jones said. "We got in the lane, penetration to dump offs, penetration to lobs when we moved the ball and made the defense work. I think far too many times we came down and had a one-dribble handoff into a shot, one pass shot. I think we played too much one-on-one basketball and definitely moving forward we need to play more team basketball. When we did that, we looked really good. I was happy with our execution."

The 2018-19 season will officially get underway overseas as the Bears travel to Shanghai, China to take on Yale on Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. (PT). The game will be broadcast live by ESPNU. The home opener is set for Nov. 13 when Hampton visits Haas Pavilion as part of the Legends Classic. Tip time is set for 7 p.m. For ticket information, visit CalBears.com/tickets or call (800) 462-3277.
