BERKELEY - The Cal women's basketball team wrapped up preseason play in victorious fashion, defeating visiting Westmont, 79-62, in an exhibition game on Thursday night at Haas Pavilion. The Bears showed off their depth on the offensive end, with three different players scoring in double-figures, led by a 25-point, six-rebound effort from senior
Kristine Anigwe. The Preseason All-Pac-12 selection finished the night 12-18 from the floor, while sophomore
Kianna Smith added 13 points and fellow post player
CJ West finished the game with 10 points, going 5-6 from the floor.
Playing in their first game at Haas Pavilion, newcomers
McKenzie Forbes, Receé Caldwell, and
Sierra Richey all made valuable contributions. Forbes had eight points, while Caldwell, a graduate-transfer, had a well-rounded night with six assists, five rebounds, and four points. Richey knocked down a three-pointer in her lone field goal attempt of the night.

Both teams started the game hot from the floor, combining for 87 points in the first half. Cal did the majority of its damage in the paint while Westmont went 8-15 from beyond the arc in the first half alone. Â Cal's defense clamped down in the second half, holding the visiting Warriors to just 22 points over the final two quarters combined.
Cal will tip off the regular season at home on November 6, hosting Houston at 7 p.m. PT. The Golden Bears opened the 2017-18 season with an 87-80 victory at home over Saint Mary's. Six different players scored in double-figures for the Bears, led by a 17-point effort from Anigwe.
Houston return all five starters from last season's team, which went 20-12 and reached the WNIT. The Cougars were picked to finish third in the American Athletic Conference Coaches' Preseason Poll, finishing third in the voting behind UConn and South Florida.
In recognition of Tuesday's local and national elections, all voters will receive a free general admission ticket to Tuesday's contest.
