Cal Continues Road Trip
Golden Bears Set For Tuesday Matchup At BYU
PROVO, Utah – The 23rd-ranked Cal women's basketball team looks to continue its strong start to the season, taking on BYU at 4 p.m. MT/3 p.m. PT on Tuesday evening at the Marriott Center. The Golden Bears (2-0, 0-0 Pac-12) are coming off an impressive second-half performance in Sunday's road win at Penn State, outscoring the Lady Lions, 36-15, over the final 12:52 of the game to come away with the 75-58 victory. Cal looks to carry that momentum into Tuesday's matchup with the Cougars (1-0, 0-0 WCC), who opened the season with a 72-70 overtime win over UC Riverside.
Tuesday's game will be the fifth meeting all-time between Cal and BYU, with the Golden Bears winning each of the previous four meetings including a 70-45 victory for the Bears last season in Berkeley. Then-senior Mikayla Cowling led Cal with 21 points while freshmen Kianna Smith and Alyasia Styles also had big outings. Smith finished with 12 points and five assists while Styles grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds to go with eight points and two steals.
Heading into Tuesday's contest, all eyes will be on Cal senior Kristine Anigwe, the reigning ESPNW National Player of the Week. The 6'4" forward also collected Pac-12 Player of the Week honors after a dominant start to the season, averaging 30.5 points per game and 17.5 rebounds per game through the Bears' first two outings of the year. Anigwe is coming off a 24-point, 22-rebound performance on Sunday against Penn State, registering her second career game with 20+ points and 20+ rebounds. Anigwe's 22 rebounds are tied for the most by any Division I player in a game so far this season.
The Bears have also received major contributions from junior Jaelyn Brown through the first two games of the season. Brown grabbed a career-high eight rebounds to go with 10 points in Cal's opening win over Houston and scored a season-high 16 points on Sunday against Penn State, going 7-9 from the floor.
Senior Asha Thomas, who is slated to play in her 100th career game on Tuesday, has also scored in double-figures in each of the Bears' first two games of the season. An Oakland-native, Thomas enters the matchup with the Cougars with 985 career points, 15 away from becoming the 30th member of Cal's 1,000-point club.
