Bears Place Five On All-Pac-12 Team
BERKELEY – Senior
Shinya Kadono led a contingent of five Cal men's soccer players who were placed on the All-Pac-12 Team released Wednesday.
Kadono, after one of the top individual offensive seasons in program history, earned First Team honors while senior midfielder
Sam Ebstein and junior goalkeeper
Drake Callender were named to the Second Team. Senior defender
Sam Junqua and junior goalie
Noah Texter earned honorable mention.
With four Pac-12 teams still set to play in the postseason, Kadono currently leads the conference in goals (12), goals per game (0.67), points (26), points per game (1.44), shots (58) and shots per game (3.22). He is also tied for second in the Pac-12 with three game-winning goals. Kadono ranks in the top-50 nationally in all of those categories.
Kadono's most memorable moment this season came on Sept. 22 in a match played at Avaya Stadium in San Jose. He scored four goals and amassed nine points to lead the Bears to a 6-2 victory over Sac State, and those numbers are tied for the most in a single match across the country this season.
Kadono's 12 goals place him in sixth place on Cal's single-season scoring list. He is attempting to become the first Cal player to pace the Pac-12 in both goals and points since Andrew Wiedeman in 2008.
Kadono was an All-Pac-12 Second Team pick last season.
Ebstein, who earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention last year, played at a high level despite battling an injury all season that forced him out of two matches and to come off the bench in three others. He still finished tied for second on the team with three goals and seven points. Last week, Ebstein also garnered Google Cloud Academic All-District 8 First Team honors.
Callender, an All-Pac-12 First Team selection in 2017, also dealt with an injury most of the season that forced him out of four matches and parts of others. He still posted four shutouts and finished third in the conference with 38 saves.
Junqua was a rock in Cal's backline, leading the team with 1,666 minutes played. He had nine shots and an assist and was the Bears' primary option on corner kicks.
The selection of Texter as an honorable mention recipient gives the Bears a rare double for goalies on the All-Pac-12 Team. Texter filled in admirably while Callender was out, including a couple of spectacular performances. His 10-save outing at Washington on Oct. 11 was the most by a Pac-12 goalkeeper in a single match this season. He also had a seven-save performance at UCLA on Nov. 1.
