Guards Lauren Fields (left) and Cailyn Crocker (right) will join the Cal women's basketball team next season.
BERKELEY - Head coach
Lindsay Gottlieb and the Golden Bears are excited to announce the addition of Cailyn Crocker and Lauren Fields to the Cal Women's Basketball program. Both highly-rated guards, Cocker and Fields signed with the Bears on the opening day of the NCAA's early signing period and will bring a well-rounded approach to Cal's program, both on and off the court.
"I'm thrilled for Lauren and Cailyn to be joining our Cal Family," said Gottlieb. "These two young women, to me, are an incredible fit for Cal because they are exceptional student-athletes. Not only are they smart, they appreciate what the Cal community and the Cal degree will mean for their futures. I think they're excited to help us win and do big things on the basketball court, but will also contribute to campus beyond the walls of Haas Pavilion. We are very excited about this class, beyond just their skill on the basketball court."
Cal's first player from the state of Oklahoma, the 5-9 Fields will bring athleticism to the Bears' backcourt.
"We're excited to have such a dynamic wing like Lauren in our class," said Gottlieb. "She's an explosive athlete who also brings an ability to shoot the three, get to the rim, and defend at a high level. She's a really exciting player that I know our fans will appreciate."
A four-star guard according to ProspectNation, Fields is a senior at Shawnee High School, located 40 miles outside Oklahoma City. Fields began her high school career at Deer Creek, earning All-Conference honors and leading her team to the Class 6A State Championship game, before transferring to Shawnee last winter. In addition to her success in high school and on the club basketball circuit, Fields has also been able to test her game abroad, traveling to Europe this past summer as a member of the 2018 Adidas Girls USA Select Team and competing against several Under-20 teams from Italy.
Joining Fields in the backcourt is Crocker, a southern California native. A 5-9 point guard, Crocker brings a high basketball IQ and strong leadership qualities to Berkeley.
"My conversations about basketball with Cailyn have been at an extremely high level since we began recruiting her years ago," said Gottlieb. "She's a thoughtful, well-studied point guard who really understands the game and I think that's going to make her a terrific college point guard. She reads the game, she understands the game, and has the ability to create knockdown shots for others. More importantly, she's an exceptional teammate, the type of player with qualities that stand out when you watch a game. We're looking forward to adding that dimension to our team both on and off the court."
The 15
th-ranked guard in her class according to ProspectsNation, Crocker began her high school career at Los Alamitos, where she was an All-CIF Southern Section Division I-AA selection in 2017. Crocker then transferred to Mater Dei, where she helped the Lady Monarchs to a 23-6 record and the Trinity League title. Crocker will serve as a co-captain for Mater Dei her senior season.
The 2018-19 Golden Bears will be back in action this Sunday, hosting Pacific at 2 p.m. PT. Cal is unbeaten on the season and currently ranked No. 23 in the latest AP Poll.
