Fans Can Get Bobbleheads From The Play On Saturday At The Big Game
Kevin Moen's request list for his bobblehead began with his kids, but it quickly grew to over 100.
The highly-sought after giveaway for the 121st Big Game on Saturday at California Memorial Stadium is a commemorative bobblehead from The Play, depicting Moen's historic crash into Stanford band member Gary Tyrell at the culmination of the five-lateral kickoff return touchdown in the Golden Bears' 25-20 victory over the Cardinal in 1982.
Moen said he's honored to have his own bobblehead as part of the historic play from the legendary moment in school, college football and sports history. But he's quick to note that his contribution was simply the end of a team effort that allowed the miraculous touchdown to happen.
"I'm trying to take it all in," Moen said. "To have my own bobblehead is a pretty nice memento of the day. It's a nice reflection on our whole team effort during that game. It's fun and unique. I get the spotlight because I ended up with it at the end, but it was a great team effort. It's a great lesson of never quitting or giving up. It's a real honor to be a part of it."
The bobblehead, which will be handed out to the first 10,000 fans who attend Saturday's contest, features a trombone at the base, the instrument that Tyrell played. The base also includes a drawing of the field with lines diagramming how the kick return happened, as well as musical notes that show where the Stanford band was located when its members prematurely took the field.
In a lighthearted tone, Moen said he doesn't feel bad for Tyrell being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"Gary has been a good representative of Stanford because he's kept it all in perspective," Moen said. "It wasn't a life-or-death thing, It was just a unique moment. He happened to be a part of it. I keep telling him, 'If you're gonna go out on the field, be ready to play.'"
Moen and Tyrell will both be recognized on the field during the game.

The groundwork for creating the bobblehead goes back to around this time last year. Assistant Athletics Director of Ticket Sales, Service & Operations Dave Kao called Moen to ask him for his authorization to create a bobblehead with his name and likeness. Moen's stunned response was, "Are you serious?"
It didn't take long for excitement to build among Cal fans. Moen, who actually hasn't received one for himself yet, is just enjoying the ride.
"I knew it was a pretty unique moment in time, but to look back on the longevity of time, it's a very unique moment in sports," he said. "To look back over the 36 years that it's existed. ...and now the internet allows it to have a life of its own. I guess it's going to be around for a while."
Fans shouldn't wait too long to arrive at The Big Game on Saturday to own a piece of Cal and college football history.
