California volleyball brings in a pair of signees that boast in-state and international talent for the upcoming season announced head coach Jennifer Dorr
on Friday, during the national signing period.
"We're really excited about and are eager to welcome these new Bears to the program, who we feel will help contribute to our culture at Cal and add to our competitiveness on the court," said Dorr, who nears the completion of her first year at the helm.
Signee Sydney Lilomaiava joins the Golden Bears after a strong prep career. At Villa Park High School, Lilomaiava was a part of Century League's best defense in 2017 and was also named to the all-league second team. The Orange, Calif., native, holds a stellar .621 hitting percentage in her high school league, while posting a competitive .332 in club volleyball with T Street Volleyball.
"Lilo (Sydney) stood out to us in the recruiting process with her aggressive blocking style and advanced technique even though she is relatively new to the game," Dorr said. "She is also a lefty and she will add that twist as she competes for an attacking role. She is serious and deliberate in her training and academics and we look forward to her joining the squad in 2019."
Cal also brings in Deniz Milli from Istanbul, Turkey, earning the Youngest Player on Turkish National Team honor in 2016. She was named team captain and earned Best Leader recognition of the Top 12 League, which selects the 12 best players from each city in Turkey. After winning the Turkey Championship with the Sariyer Volleyball Club – Eczacibasi in 2015, Milli and her club posted top-three finishes at the championship.
"We are excited to bring in a strong and mighty outside hitter from Turkey, Dorr added. "Deniz will bring her athleticism and international playing experience to Berkeley in 2019. She will compete for the role as a 6-rotation outside hitter and we feel she will be a great addition academically to our campus."
Cal concludes one of its most competitive recent seasons with a four-game road stint, beginning with matches at No. 20 Washington tonight at 7 p.m. (PT) and No. 18 Washington State on Sunday at noon.
